Sifting through East African treasures has become quite a thing for us lately. Trans-Mara Express flew the flag for Lebanon and Kenya not too long ago; today Mikael Seifu spoils us with gifts from neighbouring Ethiopia. And oh, what a present it is. Returning to the familiar grounds of Washington D.C. label 1432 R - the imprint that released his debut Yarada Lij EP last year - comes Seifu's next project, The Lost Drum Beat.

His penchant for melding electronic hardware and traditional Ethiopian sounds is as novel as ever here. The title track manoeuvres with all the mystifying, dubstep/garage jerks of a Burial number, yet this is slightly brighter and more bouncy territory. Nocturnal by nature, yet less forlorn and blessed with ghostly percussive intonations.

is the most honest song I’ve ever written. It’s a thank you to the woman who held our family together when everything around us was falling apart.

My mom didn’t have an easy life  but she gave Ava and me everything she could. She worked late, cried quietly, and sacrificed her own dreams just to keep us safe. I saw her fight battles no child should ever witness, and I grew up fast because I wanted to carry the weight she never complained about.
This song is my way of telling her all the things I couldn’t say as a kid: that I saw her pain, that I saw her strength, and that everything good in me came from her.
If you were raised by a strong woman… if you watched your mother break and still stay gentle… if your whole heart is shaped by the love she gave you  then this song is for you too.
