Damn Legends

It’s midday in the Carolina swamplands and the sweltering heat and humidity test a man’s faith in understanding God’s purpose for creating such an inhospitable, infernal place.

And yet snakes, bugs, gators, and all kinds of creepy crawlers and critters call these isolated stretches of long leaf pines and cypress swamps their home, as do Earl Murrell and Billy Banjo, the legends of Carolina Blues, a new Southern tradition smothered in smooth licks of guitar and banjo and topped with lyrical strokes of genius.

Damn Legends, I should say.

Earl, the inventor of the one-string note, and Billy, the backbone of the banjo and blues resurgence in America, are perfectly tuned to the significance of this moment and the roles they play in delivering Carolina Blues to the world.

But how do they do it, these Damn Legends?

I can tell you that their music is not mass produced like trinkets made in sad, gray factories in far-away lands.  No, theirs is a music borne out of a necessity to quench the thirst of America’s masses, who are yearning to be redeemed and set free by wailin’ guitars and the sweet banjo twangs of the Carolina Blues.

Earl and Billy’s raspy vocals and guitar wieldin’ and banjo whackin’ licks are pure gold and so, so sweet and tasty that they should be bottled in old moonshine jugs for just that right ripeness of blues glory for the discerning American listener and revered for years to come.

Sundown in the swamps begins like it always does with Earl and Billy tuning their guitars and banjos, drinkin’ blackberry moonshine, as the crowds begin to amass in anticipation of a night of pure blues testimony, even as the wind comes rushin’ in with the threat of looming storm clouds.

As their guitars and banjos roar alive, like an angry airboat rippin’ through a hurricane, the clouds part like the Red Sea and once again the blues is delivered to the world from the swamplands, at least fifty miles from nowhere while traveling back in time.

Except that this time the sweltering heat and humidity are not due to God’s creation, but by the grace and glory of Earl and Billy, the two Damn Legends of the Carolina Blues.
