Drew - Dance All Night (Deepjack, Mr.Nu & Alphatone Remix)

On February 2nd, dance music titan Eric Prydz returned to the hallowed BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix decks, taking control of the airwaves for two hours of forward-thinking electronic music. This marked Prydz’ return to the Essential Mix show for the first time since late 2011, when it was recorded live from his set at Creamfields. The reaction to the show on Saturday was so big that it got the Essential Mix trending on Twitter on both sides of the Atlantic while it was being aired.

Change, as they say, is a good thing. And a lot has changed for Lawrence, Kansas, post-rock outfit The Appleseed Cast over the 14 years since their founding. With Illumination Ritual (out April 23rd), their first full-length since 2009’s Sagamartha & first output since 2011’s Middle States EP, they’ve embraced not only a new line-up, but also hopscotching time signatures and a tumultuous anthemic energy that rivals anything else in their consistently impressive catalog.

With lyrics written over the course of three nights, between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m., & music written over a 3 month period of time, Illumination Ritual reflects both a sense of urgency and unbridled creative energy.  Many bands fizzle out after a few records but on this, their 8th full length, they’ve hit a high mark that many will undoubtedly compare to their 2001 masterpiece, Low Level Owl.  We here at Graveface feel this is easily their best record to date though. 

Every album has come with line up changes for The Appleseed Cast.  This one introduces Taylor Holenbeck on guitar and Nathan Wilder on drums.  Both additions are outstanding on this record. Musical interplay between band members is something Appleseed Cast is known for, but the level of counterpoint and intricate yet chaotic energy is unmatched to anything they've done to date.  The songs are energetic, sweeping, full of atmosphere, melancholy yet hopeful, driving, determined, and unabashed. Lyrically, Chris Crisci (founding member) is creating images to be pieced together.  Much like Appleseed Cast's seminal work, every song has a feeling and theme, but nothing is forced or in your face.  The lyrics frame perfectly the vision of the music.  In songs like Great Lake Derelict and Cathedral Rings you can hear nods to some of their most recognizable work, but there’s something new and fresh that’s all encompassing. 

With such a natural chemistry within the new line up, it makes sense that the songs themselves, while embracing chaos and a tuneful math-rock sensibility, eschew earlier recordings’ slick production for a more organic sound. The songwriting itself grew from collaborative explorations in the studio, with each player given time to riff on the parts that had been laid down before, their spontaneous contributions captured and cut together.  Newly invigorated by their shared enthusiasm and the interplay of their individual talents, The Appleseed Cast enters their fourteenth year as a new band in the best sense, full of fresh ideas and the energy to bring them to both longtime fans and new converts alike.

Finally our compilation is being shared, and we’re truly happy with the result! During the past two years of our existence, we’ve been adjusting to a lot of changes via our musical direction. When we started posting music, the nu disco scene was pumping everywhere. Since then we’ve embraced a lot more genres. At moment it’s really hard to say what our sound is, although we will always try to share “sweet” music. We pride ourselves on the fact that some of those tracks were made by mostly unknown producers. We’ve included our favorite freebies from last year, and there are some of 2013 already. We have 40 tracks, so we divided them into two folders. These are available for free download on our Facebook page.

Next podcast in our series comes from one of our personal favourites.
Tadd Mullinix aka JAMES T. COTTON aka J.T.C. is one of our true heroes. When we had our hands on the first records of his on Spectral we immediately fell in love with his daring approach to club music. Raw sketches of great ideas - not clean, not cool, but human and deficient, singular and alive. So, signing this artist for our label is a great honour to us, and we are proud that besides presenting the eclectic SONIC CRIMINAL 12" to you, we can also provide you with this amazing podcast of his.
J.T.C. released 3 albums and several 12”es on labels such as: Spectral, Nation, Creme Organization, Shaddock, M>O>S and many more. As DABRYE he released on Ghostly International and Good Boy records and as SK-1 on Rephlex, Rewind and Planet μ. Tadd Mullinix is also involved in the following projects: 2 AM/FM, The Saturn V, X2 and many more.
Tadd Mullinix, when not producing hip hop as Dabrye, has been leading the way for a new wave of jackin' house, acid house, techno and electro under the aliases James T. Cotton and JTC. Recording for Spectral, TNT, Nation, Creme Organization, Udek, Frigio, M>O>S, Minimal Rome, Frigio, and Relief, collaborating with Todd Osborn, D'marc Cantu and Traxx, and having remixed Orgue Electronique and Depeche Mode - he has received critical acclaim for his raw productions from influentials like Laurent Garnier, Traxx, and Trevor Jackson. And his records have been in rotation thanks to respected DJs like Theo Parrish, Sven Väth, Traxx, Carlos Souffront, Ryan Elliot, Ben Sims, Mick Wills, Serge, and DJ Qu. He's been DJing professionally since the mid-90s, meanwhile drawing influences from Ron Hardy to Jeff Mills. JTC has been touring the world and also playing regularly in his hometown, Ann Arbor, blending seamlessly, unreleased toriginals, techno, disco, and everything in-between.
In 2010, at the University Of Michigan, Tadd performed with Laura Kuhn, director of the John Cage Trust, Cage's "Indeterminacy".
