Λένα Πλάτωνος (Lena Platonos) is a Greek musician, pianist and music composer. Her debut solo album, ‘Μάσκες Ηλίου’ (‘Sun Masks’) was produced in 1984 and reissued by Dark Entries in 2016. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the Roland TR 808 drum machine and Yamaha C60 synthesizer. Lena narrates each song in deadpan fashion, skillfully reciting her surreal Greek poetry. Her lyrics deal with the futility of love, the gap of human relationships, consumerist alienation in the bourgeois lifestyle of the 1980s.

We’ve recruited four of our favorite contemporary producers to remix their favorite tracks from ‘Sun Masks’. First up is “Lego” remixed by triple scorpio supernova Avalon Emerson, who is based in Berlin. Her remix morphs the track into a solid dancefloor twister. Next is “Lego” remixed by Lena Willikens, Cologne based DJ and resident at Salon Des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. She provides a deep and psychedelic journey through the darker shadows of the early night or morning. On the B-side is New Yorker and Firehouse Recordings boss Kim Ann Foxman remixing “Hoping By Shopping”. She transforms the spacey robotic vocoder track into a dynamic deep house workout, tough and dreamy all at once. Closing out the EP is a remix of “Wrong Love” by Berlin via Bucharest producer Borusiade aka Miruna Boruzescu. Enhancing the original melancholic piano ballad to a cosmic processional with poignant bass lines that build and recess like the ocean tides. 

All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is a reinterpretation of the original ‘Sun Masks’ cover, isolating the photograph of Lena wearing sunglasses designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes a two-sided postcard with a manipulated film still from one of Lena’s music videos.

Munich. 1994. A group buck current trends with a ground-breaking release. Tikitaka by Tamburá left aside the techno of the time to focus on a the lesser known styles of afrobeat and tribal music. The result was three tracks that sail and soar on a primal energy, three works that whisk listeners away to exotic lands of wooden wind instruments, ritualistic vocals and, even, bag pipe majesty. For twenty five years this record has been an unattainable mystery, until now that is. Kalahari Oyster Cult have lovingly restored all three of the trailblazing original tracks alongside two very special remixes. Melbourne’s Tornado Wallace adds new layers of intensity as he cuts and reshapes melodies and beats to set any floor alight with this visionary remake. Dazion offers a very different interpretation. Focusing on vocals, this new talent accentuates the shamanic-like chants of Tikitaka, using them as a base from which throbbing synth lines grow as new depths are explored. An EP every bit as daring in 2019 as it was in 1994.

"To launch our record label, we at Bouquet. wanted to lead with a V/A compiling compelling and unusual tracks from both new and established artists that we respected. We wanted to be true to our namesake, and offer different shapes and shades and colors of music that went together pleasingly and cohesively. We turned to our friend Caffeine Worldwide" :
"Last year, the party series Bouquet asked me to curate a compilation for them as a means of launching their new record label. The idea was: eight tracks, eight artists, and a pay-what-you-want release that would send a portion of proceeds to charity. Sounded easy enough.
I dropped a line to every working producer I knew personally or was merely aware of; I scoured Soundcloud for new artists; I damn-near harassed some of my closest friends for interesting work. Eight months and a thousand Facebook messages later, and it’s finally ready for you to rinse.
Rather than the random collection of b-sides and sketches that characterizes most digi comps, Bouquet. and I were very keen on making this a cohesive collection from front to back. I think we ended up with exactly that—and a collection that reflects the eclectic, fun party lineups that Bouquet. usually books.

Evolution is good, and that’s an ethos Anja Schneider continues to hold high with her label Sous Music. Providing a creative platform for Anja to evolve her own sound and a home for exciting collaborations with the new wave of outstandingly talented and accomplished producers Schneider admires. Expect forthcoming contributions from Fort Romeau, Mella Dee, and on this release, Saint Petersburg based producer Nocow.

Opening track ‘Sissi’ has a high impact warehouse vibe; a sound Anja says best describes the style that she is playing at the moment. Taking inspiration from an old-school feeling, its deeply hypnotic, groovy and minimalistic. Not techno, not house – ‘Sissi’ sits perfectly in a space between genres.

Schneider’s experimental spirit shines bright on title track ‘Closer’. Tough drums underpin a wickedly groovy vibe of sparse percussion and a rhythmic stab. Defying conventional wisdom of adding layers and layers of scattering hats to grow tension, Anja instead opts to allow each musical element breath and create their own energies, the triumph being the result of getting so much from so little.

Aleksei Nikitin AKA Nocow has become known for productions that cross borders between house, techno and modern electronica, making for consistently intriguing musical output. With releases on Rekids and Len Faki’s Figure and LF-RMX imprints, Nocow interpretation reinvents ‘Closer’ into an deeply emotive vocal techno beast.

Kalaha - Dragon Jenny (SidiRum Remix)

The original I’m Wild, Oh I See was part of REPVII released in 2017. Remixed by Id!r and Theus Mago. They gave the track a more dancefloor orientated feel. The two Remixers met and became friends back in 2014 in Paris. This is a swift and thunderous collaboration between the two, made in Theus studio in Mexico City. Theus Mago is the alter ego of Mexican producer Mateo González.
