The Brooklyn-based curator, spinning from NYC to Burning Man and more, caught our eye in the past months with his top notch mix sessions. We're delighted to welcome him into the hotseat today with a fresh tape. He's rinsed a lush sixty minutes, a real journey from deep electronica to incredibly atmospheric deep house. "I played 10 different sets on the playa this year! Here's 3 of them. Treavor Moontribe told me he's curating a Moontribe & Friends take over at the amazing Kalliope Art Car and it turned out to be one of my fav. gigs of this burn. When the opening DJ didn't make it, I ended up playing an extended opening set, then a powerful B2B with Armando Kroma, and of course closing it out by playing my schedule sunrise set.

9 1/2 hours of house and techno, enjoy!"

Anton Tumas - Kalliope - Burning Man 2017 - Monday Launch

Returning to this utopia in the desert is a dream each year. Having the Sunday slot in my mind for weeks had me thinking I would take it easy leading up to it. I was mistaken. Together with Britta, the Happy Camper gato's and our favourite Robot LEN10 we roamed the desert like there was no tomorrow. Ended up having one of the best weeks of my life and happened to be my perfect warm up to play Robot Heart.  Surrounded by some of my favourite humans on the planet the set came together by relying on ease, love and gratitude.  

Much love to all the shiny disco balls dancing all over the bus & the Playa for the warm hearted support and off course the robots for having me and welcoming me and my friends with open arms. I loved it.

Unders - Robot Heart - Burning Man 2018

I’m back from the Burn and the very first thing I want to share with the default world is the biggest DJ performance I’ve ever played in my life: The sunrise set at the 747 art car at Burning Man! 

This was challenging in many ways: I had had very little sleep as we were working HARD to build our 747 camp and art car, while trying to finish the 747 project in time for the Burn. 

There were also some challenges during the set, for instance: a pendant getting entangled with my headphones post head-banging, and having to pull a radical self-reliance move with my Swiss army knife to cut the pendant string off before the next mix was due.

It was epic, it was beautiful, it was emotional, it was incredible to see so many of my friends in there, it was full of chances I decided to take as a DJ in terms of track selection (trying a bit of a cosmic/rocktronica approach) and... 

On my days before the Burn I was re-reading/re-visiting the book “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran. At the very last minute I decided to bring it to the Burn to read while on the playa. It was gifted to me by one of my best DJ friends who passed away 10 years ago around the time of the Burn. In the last Farewell chapter of the book, there is a passage about sunrises and reconnecting with others in future places. When I had to reach into my DJ bag mid-performance to look for the Swiss army knife I realized the book was there with me on stage, and also that the sound engineers had provided a microphone… 

So I started fantasizing about taking advantage of the perfect breakdown/drop from any of the tracks I was about to play, in order to read a part of the book and dedicate it to Navid. I took the chance to read this poem to him in the middle of the set on playa when the breakdown to Einmusik’s “Serenade” kicked in... 

For those of you who can’t (or couldn’t) understand what was read during the moment, this is what the passage of the book says. There was a crackle in the mic and I accidentally said the word "ring" instead of "sing":

“It was but yesterday we met in a dream.
You have sung to me in my aloneness,
and I of your longings have built a tower in the sky…

The noontide is upon us and our half 
waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part.

If in the twilight of memory we should
meet once more, we shall speak again together
and you shall (sing) to me a deeper song.

And if our hands should meet in another dream
we shall build another tower in the sky.”

Lastly, as always there was one last track that I really, wanted to play for all but in the overwhelming ending to it all I forgot about it, so I added it to the recording at the very end at home. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did and thank you for being inside the plane at the very end, I wasn’t aware of how many of you were still there, and it was then that I became overcome with tears of joy. (I did cry in public at the end of the DJ set, and I am ok with that, so as they say… “fuck your Burn!” hehe)  

And HUGE thank you to Gunita, Nikki and Ken of Big Imagination for providing me with this monumental stage to craft something as meaningful as our plane, you guys are family to me, this one was for you as well, love to you all!

A message from the artist
This year, the unforgettable 2020, I'm celebrating 20 years of Djing.  Its been an incredible journey filled with loads of art, love and positive energy.   The COVID-19 outbreak opened up an opportunity to reset and reflect on where it all started.  Reflecting on my early roots and a time I was young, free, completely transfixed with the art of DJing and the music it embodies. For over 2 decades now, I've managed to develop an ear for all sounds and discovered that music has no borders nor boundaries.  It's an audible escape, that can transpose you to your chosen oasis, albeit within one's own mind.

For this mix, I tried to create a psychedelic journey into sounds that have influenced me as an artist and best represent the community amongst us.  My message through this is for us to remember that everything flows and all is connected, we are but one vibration, floating through space.  

Thank you to Corr and Jai for the invitation and for the great work you are doing with the Flow platform for the community and the greater world.

Öona Dahl - Mayan Warrior - Virtual Burning Man 2020

Hi- Its me. Been a while.. Since the end of May Nina and I have spent a whole lot of time traveling around camping in CO and Wyoming. Its been nice to get away from social media, news and heat here in Denver. We miss you though. Anyways, I have made a few mixes at home over the last few months when we were in town and finally happy with this new one. Lots of older music from 10+ years ago mixed in with some fresh new jams. Its of course fairly eclectic- deep house, minimal techno (with soul), indie, leftfield and funky. Lots of friends music- Wolf + Lamb, Mark Slee, Acid Pauli, Viken Arman, Stavroz, Kerala Dust, Nico Stojan, etc.

Peter Blick- Summer In The Woods 2020 Mix

Dance Spirit is a duo dedicated to the attainment of subconscious harmony through rhythm, timbre, melody and movement. Based in Los Angeles, they’ve forged these elements into a vehicle of positive change through the medium of live electronic music.

Esoteric as it may sound, their philosophy has yielded achievements of substance. Championed by such respected labels as Get Physical Music, Crosstown Rebels and Bedrock Music, they have made a lasting mark on the global dance music landscape. Their all-original live sets have garnered them worldwide renown, but somehow the years to come look to be the brightest yet.

The seeds that would eventually grow into Dance Spirit were sown when Christopher Mohn befriended Reagan Denius owing to their shared love of progressive house. The former musician was born in Durango, Colorado and the latter in Austin, Texas - but they both grew up in Southern California and met in 2006 while working together for San Diego promoter Realivze Tribe. After shelving a previous techno project, Mohn and Denius debuted Dance Spirit live on The Rooftop of The Standard Downtown LA during a 2011 installment of Harmonic’s Bask event series.

2013 marked a major turning point for the duo. Between sharing the stage with Mr. C at underground warehouse parties and getting their Manifest EP signed to Audiofly’s Supernature imprint, they began to cultivate an international fan base. By the end of the year they had landed a residency with the Flying Circus event series at Sankeys Ibiza, and 2014 saw them tour throughout the U.S. and Mexico.

In addition to the SacBe industry parties in Tulum, a Superfreq label showcase at Fabric London, and Katerblau in Berlin, Dance Spirit has brought their improvisational brand of house music to nightclubs like The Great Northern, Public Works and Monarch in San Francisco as well as holding down a residency at Do Not Sit On The Furniture in Miami. As far as festivals are concerned, their résumé includes performances at such staples as Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Lightning In A Bottle and Piknic Electronik Barcelona as well as Burning Man sound camps like Music Savages, Pink Mammoth and Robot Heart.

Meanwhile, Dance Spirit’s tireless work ethic in the studio has earned them releases on countless world-class house and techno labels. Among the highlights of their discography is their 2014 effort Take In The Night EP on Superfreq and a collaborative EP with Audiofly titled Angel Eyes that arrived by way of Mobilee Records in 2016. The latter year they also teamed up with David Scuba on an EP titled Dust that came out on Desert Hearts Records, and released the Drowning In Irises EP on Rebellion.

2017 saw the duo debut on Bedrock Records with a three-tracker called the Thoughts Like Stars EP among other releases. In the summer of 2018 they released the two-track EP Space Portal to the Heavens on Get Physical Music after collaborating with Cari Golden on the Wash Me Clean EP via Lee Burridge and Hoj’s Tale + Tone imprint.

By incorporating analog drum machines, synthesizers live vocals into their engaging performances, Dance Spirit craft mesmerizing progressive house soundscapes with subtle hints of ambient and minimal techno. Publications like Thump, Mixmag and Attack Magazine have published features on the duo, and they’ve contributed guest mixes for such iconic series as Get Physical Radio and Transitions with John Digweed. As big as their audience has grown, their vision has remained the same: to be a beacon of light on otherwise dark dance floors.

For the foreseeable future, Dance Spirit have solidified their role as a permanent fixture in the world of underground electronic music. As always, they’re content to let the music speak for itself.
