The latest instalment of our mix series comes from German DJ and Producer Sandrino. The chances are you have heard the name when used in combination with his partner in crime, as Frankey & Sandrino, but Sandrino is also a force as an individual artist, which comes through here. Both, Frankey and Sandrino, have been active with electronic music for well over a decade now. While Franky is a schooled musician who had already released a string of LP's and EP's, Sandrino started his career in 2003 with a residency at Germany's Butan Club. The duo of Frankey and Sandrino soon discovered their shared interest in deep and melodic music and started producing together. It didn't take too long until Four:Twenty Records and Moodmusic picked up their first releases.

And that's what Marcel Sterling alias Marc DePulse wants to tell us with his releases and podcasts: there is no box into which you must fit in because you are free in your mind to do whatever you love. Being real, being authentic, being a full time music lover. That means: go to bed and wake up with only music in your head. Whoever shed some tears while listening to emotional music can relate to what Marc is trying to achieve. It has to be music to remember and make a big impact. And that could be a melody, a baseline, steady percussion or strong vocals. Marc has already connected a lot of that love with his music. In more than a decade represented by the strongest labels (150+ releases) and performing on the biggest international stages, Marc has established as a unique producer and DJ. In 2014 he released his first single "No need to worry" on Noir Music. Another feature with the amazing Hollis P Monroe & Overnite has been released on Heinz Music. The single called "Dirty Deep DePulse" is a perfect name to describe Marcs sound. This year the shuffle machine continues with remixes on Noir Music, Katermukke, Traum Schallplatten, Heinz and single releases on Tulipa and Einmusika Recordings. According to these productions Marc started a brand new blog and podcast series called "How I Met The Bass".

3 QUESTIONS to PHILIPP KEMPNICH:

Q: Talking about your mix: how did these tracks change your life and have an impact on your later doings?

A: I think the tracks are showing really good why I’m doing a certain kind of electronic music today. When I  started producing my own tracks in 2010 I was really into Progressive House (Deadmau5, Pryda, …). It’s funny that this genre-name disappeared some years from the scene cause it was somehow connected to EDM. Later on I was more focussed on groovy deep and Tech House. Now you find all of these elements in my tracks. A mixture between Progressive and dreamy Techno but always groovy.

Q: When talking about Einmusika Recordings most of the people only see Einmusik behind. But one of the most important guys behind is you. Tell us about your job.

A: When I first started working at Einmusika they we’re looking for someone who can help out two times a week to do some basic webdesign and photoshop. But I noticed really fast that there are many more things to do. So I grew with my tasks and learned a lot about how the music industry works. Now Einmusika has become my main job and I’m doing a big part of the daily business there. I’m really grateful to work with such a creative team. 

Q: Which Kempnich projects are coming soon?

A: I recently released an EP on EIN2 together with Allies For Everyone from New York and I’m working on a new Einmusika EP which is coming out in the beginning of next year. I changed a lot in my studio so you will definitely here a big difference to my previous ones. Furthermore I worked out my live-set because I like to perform it soon at some selected venues.

There can be no doubt that Third Son is a name swiftly becoming more recognisable on global dancefloors. His mixture of deep, brooding melodies and tight, techno productions are starting to find favour amongst many - and his laser-precision DJ sets are in high demand.

Joseph Thomas Price comes from good stock, a musical family based in London who trained him as a musician from a young age. As a teenager he developed a taste for jazz before being seduced by rock music, before Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ really showed him the potential of electronic music. (‘That blurring of electronic and rock music was a real revelation for me at the time’) 

This healthy appetite for all shades of music has developed a sound which has piqued global interest, and he is already traveling the world as a full-time DJ only one year after the conception of the Third Son project. Price’s moody techno can also be found on scene labels like Noir, Einmusika and Syncopate - not to mention his own Polymath imprint. With an EP coming out on Gardens of God's label, Sodai, and Dense and Pika's Kneaded Pains imprint, it stands to reason that interest will only skyrocket more.

Price will be heading to Australia to play at the Rainbow Serpent Festival alongside shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Launceston (check dates below). Ahead of his arrival the producer has taken the time to compile the 60th edition of our Balance Selections podcast series: expect deep heat from start to finish.

Noch schnell den letzten Schluck die Kehle herunter spülen. Die Kopfhörer und noch ein Bier für den Weg geschnappt. Kurzen die Hosentaschen überprüft, Tür ran ziehen und los. Im Treppenhaus nur nicht stolpern, wäre schade um den guten Hopfen Tropfen. Auf geht’s hinaus in die befreiende Dunkelheit. Keine Gedanken mehr an gestern oder morgen verschwenden. Ein Leben im Hier und Jetzt, ein Leben für den Schall und den Rauch. Die Straßen und Clubs mein eigentliches Zuhause und die Musik meine Lebensader. Also Kopfhörer auf und Serotonin-Spiegel rauf. Auf dem Weg zum Exzess schon mal fallen lassen damit der Einstieg in die Parallelwelt reibungslos funktioniert. In der Straßenbahn nochmal ein Blick auf den Flyer für heute Abend. Wunderbar Maurice Mino aus Berlin ist ebenfalls zu Besuch. Kicks und Grooves im betörenden Wechsel, seine letzten Sets aus dem Watergate und der Hammahalle waren sehr schweißtreibende Angelegenheiten. Da sollte man sich dringend den aktuellen Podcast gönnen. Es wird langsam schwarz vor meinen Augen und die Musik durchströmt meinen Kopf. Was um mich herum geschieht nehme ich nicht mehr wahr. Minuten verrinnen in Sekunden und mein Geist befindet sich auf einer anderen Bewusstseinsebene. Bis eine kleine Erschütterung meinen neuen Kosmos zusammenfallen lässt, wie die Stadt am Ende von Inception. Ein weiteres Finger tippen auf meiner Schulter reißt mich endgültig aus meiner Traumwelt. Vor mir steht einer dieser nervigen ComRa Promoter.

What do you do to get into a creative state?
"Sometimes the machines just inspire me, sometimes I open a bottle of wine."

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
"Situations that I’m finding myself in in, the feelings I have, technology around me."

What do you love most about being an artist?
"Touching peoples hearts man. Seeing happy faces at gigs or getting messages of people that are moved by my music gives me a lot of strength."

How do you stay focussed in a world of constant distraction?
"Just turn off notifications & zero in on the machines. I have a lot of trouble focussing, so eliminating distractions helps me a lot."

Do you have a morning routine?
"Hell no, I’m not a morning person!"

What fascinates you about your art from?
"One guy sitting in his basement can do it all, create an atmosphere & make people move and feel – the ability to convey emotion through a technological intermediary."

What, for you, is the purpose of art?
"Expressing yourself through a medium & let other people feel by coming in contact with your work. Art does not necessarily has to have a function, in contrast to design – a lot of dance music (including mine) is more design than art."

What is sacred to you?
"Staying true to myself, integrity is key. I like the Egyptian afterlife concept of having your heart weighed against a feather."

What is your opinion on success?
"Success is when you look back on the path you treaded & get a warm, fuzzy feeling."

What is your opinion on failure?
"Failure is such a loaded term. The absence of success is not failure & failing a goal you set for yourself is not actually a bad thing. Every „failure“ is something you can learn from and improve."

What would your 16 year old you think about what you’re doing today?
"Since my 16 year old self was already dabbling with Ableton he would be like 'Damn you have all that gear - make more music!'“

What makes you laugh?
"Dogs. Dogs are awesome."

In which ways could the scene improve in the future?
"Right now there’s too much focus on self-marketing via social media & less on creativity and skill. This is in part due to an over-saturation of the market which makes it hard to be the cream rising to the top. I hope that in the future we find a way to honor quality & dedication and focus less on shiny pictures & follower metrics. 
Women are still underrepresented in my scene (especially on the production side) and sexism is still a thing. Hopefully, we can be more welcoming & kind towards dedicated female newcomers and have a more diverse palette of creative output together. 
What also bothers me is the stagnation. E.g., once there is a successful sound, a bunch of copycats swoop in and the market is flooded with „same-ish“, uninspired works. How did we evolve from ten years ago? Right now a lot of the new stuff that is most visible sounds like boring, recycled 90s stuff. Electronic music & especially Techno was once a promise of uncharted sonic territory and possiblity, so why do we always go back to the same 909 Drums and Acid Lines?"

Who will considerably give direction to the scene soon?
"Right now, we’re at a turning point due to the COVID-19 quarantine. After the dust settles I really hope that the underground spirit returns and a lot of new & creative artists emerge and get a chance to be heard. This is an extinction-level event for the clubbing scene, but after a forest fire new life always springs. And I really hope that the younger generation of artists will rise to the occasion and bring a new sonic diversity to the scene."

Favorite release at the moment & of all times?
"At the moment I really dig the first Koelsch Album 1977. 
Favorite release of all times is a hard pick. With Teeth by Nine Inch Nails and Gui Boratto’s Chromophobia have a special place in my heart."
