Elly & Rikkert’s Dutch Psychedelica 1967-1975

‘Laat mij verdrinken in jouw muziek”

It is very hard to enter a thrift store in the Netherlands without an Elly & Rikkert record somewhere in its bins. Their ubiquity in thrift stores combined with their absence from the Dutch pop canon, especially when compared to their contemporaries like Boudewijn de Groot and Ramses Shaffy, led to the hypothesis that their music must be pretty bad. 

This hypothesis was far from correct. Their early work is soundwise forward-thinking, cosmic, atmospheric, poetically genius and delightfully weird. The combination of a plethora of obscure percussion, wind, string instruments and even the occasional synthesizer creates an otherworldly sound, which is complemented by their storytelling about gods, fables, mythical creatures and fictitious locations, as well as some tender and sweet romantic songs and a few political nods.

They are most well-known for their ‘Christian Children’s music”, which has dominated their image. Apart from a mention in a Lucky Fonz III song and some coverage of Elly's feature on a Boudewijn de Groot song their music is not discussed much in the secular sphere. To re-evaluate Elly and Rikkert this mix was made. Their work gets gradually more religious over the course of the years, especially after their conversion to Christianity in 1976, which is perhaps the reason their early work is so underappreciated; there is no place in pop culture for Elly and Rikkert in an ever-secularising world. 

This mix combines some of our favourite songs and sections from their early work. An ideal soundtrack to a spring trip and to channel your inner commune.
