Laurent Jeanneau (aka Kink Gong) has spent years recording rare and obscure ethnic music from all over southeast Asia. He also collects video compact discs (VCDs), the most widely available format in Asia for everything from kung fu movies to pop music videos. Laurent recently dug into his VCD collection, most found in the markets of small, rural towns throughout the region, and selected some great Khmu and Lao folk music from Laos for your listening pleasure. All of the songs selected for this mix feature the 16-tube bamboo reed or mouth organ (khene). Listen closely and you’ll hear different singing styles and patterns typical of the country’s two major ethnic groups and geographic zones, the Khmu in the north and the Lao in the south. All of the tracks are raw and intimate, recorded on location, and feature the occasional chorus of crickets and other ambient sounds and noises typical of rural Laos. Tracks 1, 3, 5, 7, etc are Khmu, and tracks 2, 4, 6, 8 etc are Lao.

Laotian Folk Music on VCD (RIAFC065)

The soulful sounds of South Indian mandolin, featuring Uppalapu Srinivas, the child prodigy who at the age of nine introduced the mandolin into the carnatic tradition (something that normally takes generations), and Sreeusha and Sireesha, self-taught sisters popularly known as the Mandolin Sisters, all to a backdrop of field recordings made on location in India by World Listener. As always, you can expect a few brief detours along the way, including a group of children practicing a carnatic song at school, some loud bus music, and a wonderful Tamil radio collage from the LP Bats in the Temple by Robert Millis.

Fiends unwinding in remote junkyards, listening to some crackly tunes on rusty transistors, clinging to the good ol’ days, but was there even any? No job, no money, nothing to be diverted with, excepting the hits that warp both music and mind. A loop, day after day, in these desolated ratholes: the dope, the trip, the substance, the sleep. Merging folk with vaporous noise, jazz with psychedelic indus, pop standards with dark ambient. Replace life with a dazing void, leave your weary carnal envelope behind.

After creating in 2018 with Daya Hallé the audiovisual label 2files4free, but also contributing to several compilations in 2021 (Night On Earth, Night Drive, Krakzh, Vasteschoses), Catherine is now working on her first solo cassette for Simple Music Experience.
