John James Audubon is known for his drawings of birds, but what is equally of note is his written descriptions of the territory between our two great American mountain ranges the Appalachians and the Rockies. As he wandered and drew he met Native American communities, horse traders, gamblers, professors and madmen. His description of the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys are matched by few in their value as natural history, travelogue, and ethnographic reportage all at once.
