Just weeks after topping the charts with his beautiful ‘Summer Of Tearz’ and releasing his highly addictive third album ‘Neu’, Basti Grub returns with another uncompromised exercise in deep, rolling, groove-laden tech designs on Davide Squillace’s This And That.

Take a moment to find yourself in ‘A Little Lost’, a sprawling 10 minute opus that morphs and mutates with ageless mechanical magic. With a funk generated from broken sub-rhythm and pneumatic kicks, it wouldn’t have gone amiss in a Tyrant set 15 years ago... Or 15 years in the future.

‘I Need You Now’ follows with stern advice on practicing safe Sax. Deftly deconstructing one of house music’s most iconic vocal samples and rebuilding it in his own hypnotic way, Basti orders us to let ourselves go... And with such strong groove command it’s impossible to say no.

Dig deeper for ‘All I Need Is To Be High Sometimes’: another one of Basti’s signature 10 minute epics, it’s awash with trippy textures, each one looping gently off the next, creating a sonic sea of waves that lap gently through the mists of your psyche.

Remix-wise Lee Van Dowski clears the fumes and adds his own unrelenting charge with a slippery, sobering techno steam engine twist that balances tightly clipped synths and soul-shaking percussion.

Finally Basti close the EP curtain with his old friend Mike Trend. Picking up where ‘Motorschaden’ left us in 2012, ‘Watching You’ delicately layers choral harmonies and faraway vocal over infectious rhythmic pops and bubbles. Mournfully soulful, it’s a perfect EP and set closer.

Our colleagues from @soundhitectures presented us a very special & unique album from @evident, that we definitely wanted to be a part of.  We asked this gentleman to answer some questions, that quickly came up, listening through this ambitious LP :

Q : What a huge album this is. Do you think all of these tracks have their place?

A : Thank you. Yes, definitely... each one has its place. The first version of the album was 35 minutes long and it wasn’t even split in tracks. At the end I figured it’s just too ambient. Then I’ve remixed it & split a few of those ideas in separated tracks, added beats and stripped away most of it, to the form you can listen now. It’s not as coherent as it should be in my mind, but I still very much like it. First half of the album is calmer and the second is way harder. So the short answer is yes; each track has its own place. 

Q : Did you work on all these tracks with a "I will include it in my album" kind of mindset?

A : Not at all. I wanted to record the album in summer 2016, but it didn’t go as planned. I made a lot of music but it didn’t sound interesting & good enough to me. So I dropped the idea of making an album. I actually finished an EP in November and send it to my friend Roby Deep for mastering. The EP contained four tracks and three of those are remixed and re-arranged inside the album. I finally decided to make the album with approximately 10 (now 15) tracks at the start of January. I’ve spend most of January and early February in full production mode and the album was born. It might be too long, but in my mind it makes sense.

Q : When did you first had the idea of this album and how did it's title influence the music in it?

A : Actually I wanted to make an album for a few years, but didn’t produce that much with the exception of last year. I bought new studio monitors and synths and few more studio toys and I’ve found my creativity again (in the ironical awareness of how you don’t need anything except time haha).

The title was part of the production too. I changed the titles, arrangement and tracklist around 25 times before it made sense to me. 

Q : What are the key-factors for good music in your opinion?

A : Being honest to yourself, spontaneity and experimentation. The last word is really abused, but what I mean by it is simply allowing yourself to go further, even if nothing ‘good’ or practical comes out of it. Also learning to listen.. being aware and really just listen. That’s the best skill you can have. And it comes and goes.. I don’t know. I still think I don’t know anything and it’s always day one..

Q : Does the Cover-Art symbolize something personal for you...or anything at all?

A : To me it represents a human that goes back to the jungle - it’s a romantic idea. I believe the future of human is very connected to the Earth (a lot more than we’re aware of) and to the simple things we’re forgetting in the era of fast-paced informational evolution. I think evolution is tied to the ability to elevate human consciousness and space we live in, simultaneously with technological advances. Music is a medium, that might help us achieve that.  It’s just something I’m very interested in.
