The following is a chance – based plan for a piece of computer-aided composition.

Things needed: Mac running logic, 2 dice.

1.Roll a dice to determine, or choose a pre-determined whole number of minutes for the piece’s duration. Roll both dice. Translate the numbers on the dice to a number, left then right. This is the amount of seconds to be added to the whole number of minutes.1

2.Roll both dice. This is the number of vocal samples you will record, of the numbers up until the rolled number. (If you were to roll 4, record yourself saying 1,2,3 and 4.)

3. An event will happen at these time periods in the piece, based on the Fibonacci series of numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233.

4.For each one of these occasions both dice will be rolled, and whatever number it lands on is the number of samples you will use. (If you were to roll a 5, the samples used would be 1,22,333,4444,55555).

5.If the same number is rolled twice in succession, the exact material used for the first number will be repeated, exactly the same rhythm, but not the same sound.

6.If the total of the integers added in the sequence match that of the number rolled on the dice, then all numbers must be placed in even distribution of the section. (If you were to roll 2 and 1 for the 3rd event, then 1x1, 2x2 and 3x3 would have to fit perfectly across the 1second time gap.)

7.The synthesizer sounds and pads are also assigned numbers. With each new section, a new synthesizer is allowed to join, and the order of synthesizers is decided by the number they are assigned to on the dice. A new synthesizer must be added at each event, but not every synthesizer permitted to play must play at each event.

8.Roll a dice. That number’s sample is assigned a “bitcrusher” effect, and two other numbers can have parameters modified.

9.The harmony/pitch/dynamics of the synthesized sounds are to the composer’s choice.

10.Beneath all of this, create a constant sound for both stability and constant variation.

We've not given away an entire album(!) since 2013's Around The World in 80 Riddims and 2014's Evolution LP - so it's great to break the dry spell and get another chunky body of work out. And as far as bodies of work go, this one's a fantastic addition to our FKOFFRLP archive. 

The 5 years of Club Soda LP has something for everyone; the deeper tunes alongside the garage-inspired bangers and the dubby vibes. It's a fantastic summary of what Jon and the Club Soda team have achieved over the last half decade and we're delighted to help them mark the milestone. Here's to the next 5 and beyond!
