However, I came to realize, based on Bashar’s descriptions of his own society, that in their world they are all telepathic and do not use names as we do. Since he knew that we would need to call him by some name, the name Bashar was chosen.

Bashar is an Arabic word, probably chosen because my heritage is half-Arabic, although I don’t speak the language. I had no idea what the word meant until someone fluent in Arabic told me it means “messenger,” or more specifically “bringer of good news”. Thus, while not literally his name, the word is certainly appropriate to what Bashar does."

There isn’t any single universally agreed upon story to tell. No one seems to have earnestly tried to build the timeline. So I might be one of the first to attempt to codify the lost history of Tartaria.

I think the lack of a coherent timeline could well be the reason that the story of Tartaria and the alleged subsequent cover up of what people think of as the “true history” is what makes it all so attractive. You can plug in an alternate telling of virtually any historical event that happened in the last thousand years.

Since most people don’t know much about the history of the Russian Empire in the 19th century or what life was like for a nomadic tribe in Central Asia in the 1700s —that vague knowledge of world history makes many people ripe to receive the retelling from anyone confidently making shit up as they go along.

Add to all that the fact that many of the authors and YouTubers who are doing most of the driving will often disagree on some of the details or just add their own flourishes and speculations as they go.

There’s a tremendous amount of riffing that people do in these videos. You’ll hear a lot of these presenters say something along the lines of, “you know, I haven’t actually thought about it like this until just now.” And then they proceed to rattle off some previously unexplored connection between the Tartarian Empire and a secret, global consortium of Jews who opposed it.

This is a truly crowdsourced conspiracy story, with thousands and thousands of people writing it collectively and simultaneously.

4. The Great Flood Of Deception

Ancient Greece and Rome have a heavy influence on the idea of manhood we promote on the Art of Manliness. In fact, this classical conception of manliness was how much of the West defined manhood up until the middle of the 20th century. If you were to ask a man living in 1920 what “manliness” meant, he’d probably give you roughly the same answer as a Greek or Roman man living 2,000 years ago. 

My guest on the podcast today is a classical scholar who has spent time thinking and writing about Greek and Roman notions of manliness. His name is Ted Lendon. I had Ted on the podcast awhile back ago to discuss his book Soldiers and Ghosts (episode #231 if you want to check it out). 

On today's show, Ted goes into detail about how the Greeks and the Romans defined manliness. We begin with the Greeks and how the Homeric epics, particularly The Iliad, served as their bible on how to be a man and how Achilles and Odysseus were held up as models of manhood. Ted then explains how the Athenian philosophers tried to tame Bronze Age manliness by making self-control an important element of being a man. 

We then shift gears to the Romans and discuss how they borrowed elements of Greek manliness to shape their own culture of manhood, as well as how Roman ideas of manliness differed from those of the Greeks. 

We end our conversation talking about why the virtue of self-control pops up in definitions of manliness not just in the West, but also Eastern cultures like Japan and China.
