"Baile das Antigas" (“parties of vintage funk”), have been very popular in Brazil lately, with a new generation of music listeners discovering the vast and complex musical history of baile funk. As a genre, it emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s, mixing up Miami bass, atabaque rhythms, LA techno hop, latin freestyle, euro house, electronic body music and rap into an irresistible mash up. The recent success of Brazilian producer Vhoor´s  album “Baile” and particularly the “Se Tá Solteira” single - all referring to the early days of funk - have proven that the old sound is currently the newest shit.

For my “Baile Das Antigas” mix I dug deep in my collection of funk vinyls, which I´ve collected in all those years travelling to Brazil. Having not listened to many of the funk vinyls from my vault for years, I discovered amazing tracks which I never knew I had ! E.g. I never knew that the 1992 rave classic “A Fine Day” by Opus III was big in the Rio funk scene. Most of all however I was thrilled to discover various traces of Kraftwerk sounds in various tracks, proving the continuous musical conexão Alemañha – Brazil! 

My selection is covering a release span from 1988 to 1999 and the majority of tracks I put in my mix can´t be found on any music streaming platforms or online shops, hence the vinyl crackling.  The mix features, amongst others, rare tracks from Grandmaster Raphael, the great Cashmere rework of Trio´s “Da Da Da”, various montagems and the OG track by DJ Emerson which first used the Dire Straits sax sample that pops up in funk tracks until today. 2014 marks the ten year anniversary of my compilation "Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats" which was originally released on CD (and limited edition 12" vinyl) on Essay Recordings in August 2004 (Cat Nr. Ay 04).

When released, "Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats" was the first compilation to introduce the mad beats from Rio´s hillside slums, the favelas, to a global audience. Baile Funk took the world by storm and the compilation received wide critical acclaim. 

Fifteen years later, the compilation is widely considered as the major international reference and compilation of baile funk featuring the biggest tunes of the genre from the early 00s. 

Today, the genre is still in full bloom and has diversified in various sub-genres such as funk ostentação, proibidão, rasterinha amongst others. Also, it has been adapted by many gringo producers from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, which fused elements of baile funk with trap, house, electro and various bass music genres.

This mix features the original compilation in a continuous mix.

My "Memories of Brasil" mix was broadcasted on 1st of February 2024 on the "Soulsearching" radio show on Frankurt, Germany radio station "Radio X".

Since 1997, German DJ and music journalist @mrsoulpatrolde broadcasts weekly his show from Frankfurt to the world. His  radio show explores the soul of music and finds it in jazz, funk, soul, disco, dub, house, folk, afro, electronica, hip hop - genre boundaries are dissolved and various styles are fused together. 

Whether 120 minutes from their own record box, in interviews with international guests, via "Inspiration Information" mixtapes by well-known DJs and musicians or new introductions, with the background of wanting to share and communicate this music.

What´s a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon? One option is to drive out of town to the beach and hang out with your friends. Crank up the volume of your car stereo and enjoy your own music selection while sipping beers and puffing joints.

Now imagine this scenario in a sub-saharan African metropolis of today. Add a bit of a traffic jam before you reach the beach, think of car stereos that blast out selections of Afro House, Kuduro, Kizomba and African Rap. And soon you are close to the vibe that Daniel Haaksman´s new single "Sabado" is all about. It´s a lazy, laid back uptempo track that puts the listener to an imaginary car park party on an African city beach front. It features the mighty guitar licks of Colombia´s Bulldozer, but has an allover South-African feel to it. Yes, Paul Simon´s "Graceland" is an influence here, but also all the hot new house track that comes out of South Africa and the Portuguese speaking African countries such as Angola and Moçambique. Thus the tune is called "Sabado", Portuguese for "Saturday".

Today, I’d like to share a fresh new track with you. It’s called „Fauna“. After „Flora“ (released in November 2024, played by DJs like Tash LC, Black Mamba and Papaoul amongst others) "Fauna" extends my mashing up of genres. With „Fauna“ I’m mixing up Batida rhythms from Lisbon and Angola with baile funk beatboxing. The cherry on top of "Fauna" is a Detroit inspired TR-303 synth line. 

Played back to back, „Flora“ and „Fauna“ perfectly match. Call it a transatlantic super melange between Rio x Luanda x Berlin x Detroit.

Fauna

I just returned from a three week stay in Rio De Janeiro. Had an amazing time, hanging with old friends and meeting new people, digging old and new music, visiting countless parties and pre-carnival events. Rio is a music lover´s heaven and I came back to Berlin, inspired. Obviously, it´s Rio´s blossoming funk culture which keeps the city´s music output burning. Now that baile funk has become a global hype it is the cultural pride of the city, mirrored for example in many Afro Blocos dropping a funk tune in their carnival rehearsals. Parallely to its global diffusion, Rio funk is locally morphing into various micro or nano genres. Now that everyone can make music on their celular phone, even the smallest favela has its very own sets of producers and MCs and tracks which feature local or neighbourhood issues. 

Consequently, it feels like every day there´s hundreds new funk tunes popping up on Soundcloud or Youtube, often just getting airplay on one specific baile for a week and then quickly getting discarded. Currently one of the most exciting bailes of the city is the baile in the favela of Santo Amaro which runs every Saturday from midnight to 9am, audible all through the barrios of Lapa and Santa Teresa, dragging huge crowds both from the asfalto and the favela. 

What stunned me the most was the BPM speed with which the funk was booming from the massive sound system of the Santo Amaro baile. From 140 BPM to 160BPM high velocity funk seems to be the sound of the moment, with many tunes surprisingly featuring straight kick drums as a founding rhythm, driving the polyryhtmic batidas and frantic raps on top. Called "Afrofunk" , this current Rio groove sounds like UK funky on Brazilian meth, with some occasional - possibly unconcious - leanings to triplety 3Ball grooves from Monterrey. In short, this sound is hot hot hot, so I´ve quickly put together a 20 min power mix of some of the Santo Amaro tunes I could get hold of. Enjoy!

More than thirty years after its original release, Malcolm McLaren´s "Duck Rock" album stands out as one of the most innovative - yet underrated - albums of the 1980s. For audiences outside the U.S.A. "Duck Rock" single handedly introduced the holy, global reaching innovations of hip hop - rapping, scratching, breakdancing and graffiti - through the music video of the album´s hit single "Buffalo Gals". 

"Duck Rock", produced by 1980s producer superstar Trevor Horn, was also one the first pop album to introduce sampling technology. Besides all the sonic, visual and technological introductions the most radical concept of "Duck Rock" however lied in the collage aesthetics of the album. Conceived as a NY pirate radio show, hosted by the DJs of the World´s Famous Supreme Team show, the album is a musical world trip on which Malcolm McLaren takes the listener from the Bronx to Soweto, to the Caribbean to West-Africa, to Kentucky and back to New York. At a time when the electro pop and New Wave was ruling the charts, McLaren proposed to look at roots music from around the world for musical innovation, patching together in an amazing, eclectic mix. The accompanying music videos for the hit-singles "Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch" showed Malcolm McLaren and crew dressed in the "Buffalo Girls / Nostalgia Of Mud" collection of his then wife Vivienne Westwood, today most known for the over-sized Buffalo hat, worn by Pharell Williams. The hat was inspired by "Peruvian women wearing bowler hats and full skirts, dancing with their babies tied on their back." said Vivienne Westwood in an interview in 1983.

With his sonic essay on "Duck Rock", Berlin based DJ, producer and Man Recordings label-head Daniel Haaksman revisits "Duck Rock" and presents an extended and alternate version of the album, including footage from TV features, interviews with Malcolm McLaren, Trevor Horn and his wife, alternate takes and versions of songs of "Duck Rock" plus unreleased fragments from the World Famous Supreme Team Show that was the founding frame for the "Duck Rock" album.

Did you ever wondered how a Steve Reich minimalist kalimba composition could sound in combination with a heavy sub bass and a two step influenced rhythm? Well, Daniel Haaksman serves the answer: His new single "Rename The Streets" perfectly combines the best of classic minimalism with the bass love of today.

The great thing about it: You can dance to it, at the same time it raises political awareness. The music video to "Rename The Streets" is adressing the demand for street name changes in Berlin´s colonial quarter, the so called "Afrikanisches Viertel" ("African Quarter"). In the video, two pole-dancers transform street signs bearing the names of questionable colonial figures with their moves into streets bearing the names of Nelson Mandela, Miriam Makeba, or anti-German colonialism fighter Morenga. 

The single comes with a DJ friendly extended mix and two remixes. The first remix is by Lisbon´s Kuduro whizkid and Afro don of the hour Dotorado Pro, the second remix by South Africa´s DJ Spoko – the inventor of “Bacardi House”. The artwork is by German artists Tobias Rehberger.

“Rename The Streets” is the first single from the upcoming Daniel Haaksman “African Fabrics” album which is scheduled for a 26th of February 2016 release.

It´s been a bit more than four months since Daniel Haaksman´s "African Fabrics" album has been released and it has become a success story. "African Fabrics" was nominated for a German Music Critic prize, was praised on diverse leading media outlets such as SPIN, NPR, XLR8R, Der Spiegel, NZZ, Songlines Magazine and Goethe Institute Podcast amongst others and has been played by countless club and radio DJs around the world. 

The accompanying single releases "Sabado", "Rename The Streets" and "Akabongi" received remix treatments, now the other tracks of the albums have been reworked and the result is "African Fabrics Remixes", which presents a trans world cast of amazing remixers. 

First off, is South African Mo Laudi with an Afro house rendering of "Akabongi". It´s followed by three remixes featuring the hot new Lisbon sound 2Pekes, a member of the infamous DZC Deejays crew remixed "Sembène" in Euro kuduro fashion, whereas Izem put "Kaggua" ft. Tshila on a broken beat turf. Man of the moment Dotorado, also hailing from Lisbon, is featured with his version of "Rename The Streets". UK´s freestyle bass dons LV revisit "Sabado" with a London carnival mood. Then there´s São Paulo´s hot new beat talent Bad $ista who samba-funked up "Black Coffee" ft. Dama Do Bling. Another Lisbon remix contribution is by legendary Portuguese kuduro don DJ NK remaking "Xinguila" ft. Throes + The Shine in a raved up kuduro smasher. Swedish bass maestro Dance, Kill, Move tamed the original footwork monster "Aho" to a tarraxo influenced half timer. Probably the heaviest remix on "African Fabrics Remixes" is by São Paulo´s ambassador of low end schlepp beats, Cybass, who put "Afrika" ft. Tony Amado ft. Alcinda Gueraneh into madness territories. Durban´s Gqom kingpins Rudeboyz added a weighty groove to the Mbira infused "Raindrops" track, turning it into a club ready track. And finally, New Zealands Afro popster Weird Together remade "Querido" ft. Bulldozer with a UK funky inspired mood. 

And there you have it, "African Fabrics Remixes", featuring eleven diverse and club-friendly remixes that will put "African Fabrics" in further and more varied contexts. Play it out!

When in the mid 1980s Bristol´s The Wild Bunch sound system did their first block parties no one would have thought that its DJs Nellee Hooper, DJ Milo and rappers 3D, Mushroom, Daddy G and Tricky would lay the foundation for one of the most successful British dance outfits, later named Massive Attack.  

Forged in the fires of dozens of sound systems battles, The Wild Bunch cultivated the musical collision between British post punk, dub and American rap.  As a multi ethnic crew they realized a social and sonic utopia in their sound system and everyday life.

Just in time of the explosion of UK dance culture in the late 1980s they released their debut album "Blue Lines", opposing the mass of  anonymous white label releases but in contrast forming a highly visible collective that did not correspond to the classical form of the band, but negated the power of the frontman and offered space for the complex identities of the fixed members and the numerous guest vocalists such as reggae legend Horace Andy or Sharah Nelson.

"Blue Lines" was also released at a pivotal moment in pop music history, when the technique of music samlping created new forms of artistic expression. Massive Attack accepted a new version of the song format, which came partly from the Jamaican sound system culture. Songs like "Be Thankful For What You Got" and "Unfinished Sympathy" are classic soul songs that the audience of mixtapes or the recordings of their parents knew, and which, in contrast to the rap parts, were able to tension great emotional arcs.

Until today, "Blue Lines" is considered one of the most important albums in dance music history.

With “24-7”, Berlin´s tropical bass don Daniel Haaksman releases the 2nd single from his upcoming new album “With Love, From Berlin” (scheduled for an end of January 2019 release on Man Recordings). The album is reflecting on Berlin as a city of yearning for international artists and travellers alike, and is featuring numerous collaborations with artists from around the world living in Berlin.

Consequently, “24-7” ft. Robert Owens + K.ZIA is a collaborative Berlin-Afrobeats track that features legendary Chicago house pioneer Robert Owens (of Fingers Inc. and Larry Heard fame) and Belgian up and coming singer K.ZIA – both calling the German capitol their home. While Robert Owens sings about Berlin as a Shangri-La “where you can be whoever you wanna be” in 24-7 mode, K.ZIA, daughter of the fabulous 1980s world music singer Zap Mama, is chanting the chorus “Taper Des Mains” (“clap your hands”), reflecting the increasing polyglot, cosmopolitan vibe of Berlin.

The original version of this Berlin tune is accompanied by two remixes from two other European capitol cities. Lazy Flow of Paris, currently the hottest tropical vogue and ballroom DJ in France, remade “24-7” in a proper Angola afro house mode. Ted Jasper of London (signed to BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Jamz Supernova´s label Future Bounce) redefined “24-7” in a subtle UK dub club mode.

"La Añoranza" is the third single release from the Daniel Haaksman album "With Love, From Berlin" (released 25h of January 2019).

"La Añoranza" is a collaboration between Berlin based artists Coco Maria (Mexico), Dengue Dengue Dengue (Peru) and Ori Kaplan (Israel).

Featuring a heavy bass Kizomba beat, the trademark flute of Ori Kaplan (Balkan Beat Box) and the sweet voice of Coco Maria, the song reflects on homesickness.

The collaboration emerged when Daniel met Berlin based Mexican DJ Coco Maria and suggested she should sing on a beat that Daniel made with Ori on flute. A debut singer, Maria came to the studio and immediately came up with the idea on singing about homesickness, a feeling that many expats living in Berlin occasionally endure. Daniel then asked Dengue Dengue Dengue, originally from Peru but also based in Berlin, to add some additional synths and ready was the very catchy "La Añoranza".

The additional Cumbia influenced remix is by Belém up- and coming talent Will Love, originally from Tecno Brega super group Gang Do Eletro. He fuses cumbia with Norht East Brazilian vibes.

Daniel Haaksman´s acclaimed “With Love, From Berlin” album (released on 25th of January 2019) is focussing on Berlin as a city of yearning for international artists. For his album Daniel commissioned various co-artists to reflect upon their live in the German capital. The feature with Angolan singer Kalaf Angelo (formerly of Buraka Som Sistema) e.g. reflects on what it means to be Black in Berlin. Mexican singer Coco Maria sings in “La Añoranza” about feeling homesick and eventually transforming into a Neu-Berliner.

One of the outstanding tracks of the album however features Brazilian singer [{“Cibelle”(})]. Internationally known since the late 1990s as one of Brazil’s most radical and talented singers and interdisciplinary artists. After a musical hiatus for a focus in visual art and transitioning , having come out as a non-binary person - thus addressed in “they/them” pronouns - [{“Cibelle”(})] moved to Berlin in 2015 after finding comfort and room for self exploration in Berlin showing itself as an accommodating, sex positive trans feminist queer hub.
Cibelle’s work addresses a need for us in society to halt the redistribution of violence and structural oppressions stemming from excluding each other on the basis of race, ability, beauty standards, gender assignment, identity or expression.
“Corpo / Sujeito” (“Body / Subject”) unfolds into a radical questioning of what it means to be a man or a woman, a body bound person or a person beyond a body, our gaze upon each other. Lyrically it narrates states of being that lay beyond gender binaries whilst affirming the strength that arises within someone in letting go of complying with the pre-existing gender binary boxes and their roles. Berlin echoes in “Corpo / Sujeito” (“Body / Subject”) as one of the global centres where one may find room to better understand oneself outside of cis-hetero-normativity, and play out one’s existence with moderately more safety than other capitals, such as São Paulo, where [{“Cibelle”(})] comes from.

The video for Corpo Sujeito offers an opportunity to the viewer to reset their own societally programmed gaze towards people in regards to how one perceives and understands gender, queerness and expression.
It shows an intersectional and inclusive selection of individuals in a plurality of sexualities, skin tones, facial features and gender identities across age in the act of simply being.
they “dress up” wearing all items of clothing in unprescribed ways, in an accumulation of layers that may mirror the layers of self that form identity or the layers of societal judgement that could exclude or include a person.
They get completely covered to the point the view looses the sense of the biology which is animating these animated piles of clothes. The bodies move with gestures that would be perceived as “feminine” or “masculine”, or combinations of both in nuance, regardless of their assigned gender. The camera highlights features that a white cis-hetero-normative society would deem as imperfections, unacceptable grooming those bodies.
The goal is to incite radical empathy though a kinder and more present gaze that recognises the validity of all shapes and forms of being and expression beyond assigned gender, identification, performance, age, race, ability, sexuality, class.
To honour the life that inhabits all bodies and expresses throughout.

The single is accompanied by a breath taking remix by LA´s Kelman Duran. Known for his unique deconstruction take on dembow ryhthms, Duran transformed Cibelle´s song into a sacral sounding, introspective track with a gut-shattering bass.

A little bit more than one and a half years after the release of the underground hit single “La Añoranza”, a collaboration featuring Coco Maria, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Ori Kaplan, Daniel Haaksman is back with a new song partnership with the Mexican singer. Building on the  success of “La Añoranza”, Berlin ́s tropical bass pioneer asked Coco Maria for a new vocal contribution to one of his personal all time favourite songs, the 1970s classic “Porque Te Vas” (Spanish for “Because you are leaving"), originally sung by Jeanette. A romantic ballad, it deals with the pain of parting. Its lyrics speak of a loss, of an abandonment and have been described as conveying a sense of longing. For Coco Maria, the song also reflects on her recent relocation from Berlin to Amsterdam. She begins singing: "Hoy en mi ventana brilla el sol y el corazón se pone triste contemplando la ciudad, porque te vas" ("Today the sun shines in my window and the heart gets sad contemplating the city, because you're leaving").The refrain features the lyrics: "Todas las promesas de mi amor se irán contigo/Me olvidarás/Me olvidarás/Junto a la estación yo lloraré igual que un niño/Porque te vas" ("All of my love's promises will go with you/You will forget me/You will forget me/Beside the station I will cry like a child/Because you are leaving"). Contrary to public reception the song is not song with a question mark, "¿Por qué te vas?" or "Porqué te vas" ("Why are you leaving?"). More the contrary, it ́s an assumption, “Because You Are Leaving”. It ́s more of a “Come on”, she, the abandoned, has assumed it. Through Coco Maria ́s subtle voice and Daniel ́s trance-synths carried arrangement and dembow groove, the new version gives the classic a fresh, 21st century update.

Autumn is slowly approaching over here in Berlin and it´s been raining a lot lately. Probably no better time to release a song about rain ("Lluvia") that keeps reminding of the great summer days yet prepares for falling leaves and chilly mornings.

Çantamarta is an emerging group from Malaga, Spain, comprised of three members: two Andalusians and a Colombian-Venezuelan. Their releases link genres like r n´b, neo-soul and hip hop with the influence of rhythms and cultural elements from Latin America and the Caribbean.

"Lluvia" serves as an ode to the "contrapunteo" battles in the Venezuelan-Colombian "Llanos" and its influence in Latinamerican hip hop. The song also includes Caribbean references such as 'Curura' by colombian folk singer Totó La Momposina, famous Venezuelan slang 'Don't do the Willie Mays' and rush hours in Caracas' subway stations.

Originally released in spring 2020, Daniel picked up the original, folky version for his radio DJ sets, but soon decided to rework the track in more uptempo fashion, added some synths and a bossa meets rasteirinha riddim and ready was another club- and radio friendly track!

Sault´s "Black Is" album was my favourite album of 2020 and as I wanted to play out some of its tunes in DJ mixes for radio, I made a samba dub version of "Don´t Shoot Guns Down" adding Brazilian flavour to the original track . Samba, since it originally emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, was always a source of joy yet often contained political lyrics dealing with current social and political issues. So what better groove format for my edit to enhance Sault´s original track which addresses the ongoing police violence against Black people.
