Tense, Shifting layers of Minimal, Melodic, and Driving Tech, Indie Dance, and House. This was the tail-end of my set, and I went for a much gentler downtrip than usual. The last bit leans hard into some of the airy and wistful vibes that were the soundtrack my summer, with a glitchy edge.

An hour and a half of selections from my 6-hour set at The Eagle NYC on March 18th, 2023. The vernal equinox deals with themes of dark vs light, new vs old, and beginning again. The mix begins in an ambient cloud, and then moves from classic house to afro house with ease. Building through melodic layers, the peak is, of course, techno, which falls into onto beautiful pad of downtempo and organic beats to finish things off.

This compilation is a mixture of downtempo music consisting of tech, deep, and vocal house.  
 
Downtempo music at one time was an essential part of the gay community dance scene starting in the late 70s up until the early 2000s. It would often be played during the last 2-3 hours of a long evening of pulsating energy, as well as the first few hours before the evening began. It was all a part of the arch of an evening where you had a beginning, a middle and an end.  
 
In the 1990s, downtempo music started to surface around Ibiza, where DJs would bring down the vibe with a slower rhythm and gentler electronic music upon approaching sunrise. It’s still being played in Ibiza until this day, and it has emerged again at various events in the gay community in NYC, Brooklyn, and Europe.  
 
Like all music, downtempo has evolved over the years; it's a part of the evening I miss playing in my sets; it was time to put out a podcast for those of you who appreciate it, miss it and are curious about it.

For the occasion of my 50th birthday, we hosted a dance party called "Fifty Shades of Neon: Back to the 80s." For three of the four hours, Brandon Hogstad delighted our guests with a nostalgic eighties tunes. But I couldn't help stepping onto the decks for a portion of the event. I chose to make a nod to the vibe I most enjoyed playing back in the day on an occasion when friends and family came from far and wide to experience the paradise we call The Pines. I was as happy as can be looking out over the beauitful group at The Pines Club on the bay, coming together in dance and celebration. Enjoy!
