Take a sail down the Blue and White Nile as they pass through Khartoum, carrying with them an ancient history and a never-ending stream of poems and songs. Immerse in the endlessly gorgeous violin and accordion driven orchestral music of 1970’s Khartoum, and the synthesizer music of the late 1980s and early 1990s. 

We’re going to bring the enchanting violin harmonies, haunting synthesizer melodies, and relentless tum-tum rhythms of Khartoum’s golden cultural era, which captured the hearts and minds of post-colonial Africa and the Middle East, to the world later this year, fully remastered and licensed. 

As always, some of these songs will be included in the final cut. Enjoy!

Hyenah invited three of his favourite producers to bring their signature flavors to The Ritual EP. 

The A side, “You Made Me Who I Am”, gets two fantastically deep South African treatments. Up first is Enoo Napa, who grew up in Umlazi, one of Durban’s largest and most creative townships, which is also considered among the most musically inspired parts of South Africa. Enoo Napa leans heavily towards Afro Tech, and does so like no other. For good reason Black Coffee recently signed him to his Soulistic inprint and is featuring his music in sets all over the world. Enoo Napa turns Hyenah’s original track into a dark, ever-growing piece of energy. Stripped to its foundation, in trademark style Enoo Napa’s remix allows a powerful warmth to grow throughout. Goosebumps.

After all, Sudan was once a musical powerhouse in East Africa, producing richly swinging orchestral pop. In recent years, much has changed. Sudan is now two countries, still troubled, but still inheritors of great musical traditions. In this program we revisit and update Sudan’s musical history, including recently released gems from a remarkable musical past, and new sounds from the Sudanese diaspora. [APWW #788]
