Happy Pride! Summer is here in the U.S., and I am feeling the collective joy in the atmosphere. As we reflect on the contributions our forebears have made so that we can enjoy the freedom and acceptance that many of us enjoy today, I wanted to pay tribute to the tea dance, which was first created in Fire Island in the 1960s. I hope to carry on this distinctly American style of music and event well into the future. There's nothing like soaking up the afternoon sun surrounded by friends and great music. Special thanks to Allen Leu for this set's cover art <3

This was a live set at the Globe Theater in Los Angeles. The charity dance was honoring Russell and benefitted homeless LGBTQ youth.

Tea Dance Favorites - June 2022

I was telling DJ Michael Rackley that I wanted to make a Pride Month mix - but that somehow I wanted to put a new spin on the concept, a new twist. 

From that vague thought and him hearing me out, a week later, I have a new mix.

It starts with a few clouds, but by the third track, they blow away and the sun comes out.  I think it is a fundamentally happy mix to help you celebrate this month.

I'm not sure I can precisely define "pride", but I know that being free is part of it - the knowledge of who you are, the courage and space to express it, as well as the confidence to allow and support others in their freedom.

This mix is about freedom.  It starts with struggling to be free.  From there, we deal with having to let another be free, and then wishing for freedom.  The mood moves up to feeling free, pleading for freedom, and then appreciating it; and rises again to revel in it. It ends with the ultimate - the freedom to spread our wings and take flight.

May you all have the insight and courage this Pride Month to be who you truly are.

Free - A Pride 2023 Mix - Happy Vocal House/Dance

Proud is a collection of some of my favorite vocal house anthems for your Pride shenanigans!

Just like the title says - this is a big bundle of joy and happiness!

I start easy with three groovy tracks, and land gently with three soft tunes, but in between, it's a whole lot of sunshine.

This set is from the fifth Flag Alley event in San Francisco - an event by flaggers, for flaggers (and those that love them!).

Or maybe "you got this!"? 

And you aren't just being nice -  because you know them, you *know* it's true.

You have faith in them.

My Pride mix last year revolved around being free - that freedom to express ourselves, to be ourselves, is an essential component of pride.

This year's mix explores another aspect of Pride: faith.

Whether you call it belief, or trust, or faith, it is also an essential component of pride.  

I know the challenges in my life would have been difficult or impossible to overcome without the faith that my close friends and husband have shown in me.

In countless ways, faith not only sustains our relationships, but also our community, and gives us hope and optimism for the future.  It enables us to not only survive, but to thrive in the face of uncertainty and adversity.

This mix is dedicated to my husband, Dave, who has always shown faith in me.

So my wish for all of you this Pride is this: may you always have all the faith you need from others, exactly when you need it.

I live in San Francisco, and I love my city immensely - the land, the buildings, the people, the music, and the art!  I also dye silk dance flags, and have been known to flag dance now and again.
