This one's a bit more of an extreme example of the kinds of melodic vocalizations I've grown to naturally express when exploring and discovering melodic terrain. For years this kind of singing is how I've written lead melodies for my instrumental pieces, as well as provided the basis for my accompanying parts in my a cappella covers and live jam sessions. But for the most part I'd never felt inclined to share it as the primary lead in any of my published work, unless it was for a short solo on a lyrical track. As I've continued to grow though, I've felt more and more inclined to explore what it could mean to do so, which felt a bit strange at first as it's pretty unconventional, but also completely natural and authentic to me, and I think it's important that we embrace our uniqueness and self-labeled weirdness. Having Bobby McFerrin as an inspiration in my life was also hugely helpful, as him being his fullest and completely unique musical self gave me more inner permission to lean into whatever that may eventually mean for me.

This one's called 'Coda', another original from the old voice notes collection. I've been hearing the idea for it in my head on and off for years now periodically. My original thoughts for it were as an electronic production, but since it never naturally blossomed beyond this core theme, it's now made it into the a cappella shorts collection.

I stumbled upon this tiny segment in a larger documentary by Drew Binsky on his journey to learn about tribal life in the Papuan rainforest. The sincerity and purity in this man's voice just shook me to my core.

Drew originally set out to meet the Korowai people to learn about and document the nature of their cannibalism, but was accidentally taken to a different group called the Mamuna tribe, who welcomed him with open arms, and allegedly have only recently had their first contact with humans of the modern industrialized world.

I think it says something remarkable that they have a song that we can so immediately and viscerally connect with, even though our cultural and musical references—on the surface—might be as distant as they get. On top of that, the fact that I can be sitting here in my little Canadian cabin, and not only hear, but sing alongside these people, and then share that with the world, is profound to me.
