More than 30 per cent of children and youth in Canada are overweight. Japan is facing a similar health crisis. And is spending big bucks to stop it.

While the country's childhood obesity rates are not nearly as high as Canada, stopping its progression has become a priority. In 2014, the Japanese government spent more than 200 million yen on food education programs in public schools.
