Each encounter with great music is an enthralling journey. My first encounter with Szymanowski’s two string quartets surprised me with joy. So I decided to write a piece about this extraordinary experience to mark the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Szymanowski String Quartet.

Obviously I had the Rondo Movement of Szymanowski’s String Quartet No. 2 in mind when I was writing this piece. The work incorporates materials drawn from different parts of the original Rondo, including the folkloric theme (quoted in a fragmented, disguised form). The audience would be taken on an “impressionistic” journey, sprinkled with moments of excitement here and there.

Apart from serving as a tribute to Szymanowski’s masterpiece, “Encounter” represents my own attempt to create a musical dialogue on strings (another form of encounter) with the ingenious Polish composer after whom the String Quartet was named.
