Lights, Bridges, & Endless Miles

Daniel Bernard Roumain(DBR) as composer, Anqwenique Wingfield as singer, and Yona Harvey as librettist have collaborated on "On the Edge of Night", a five-movement song cycle for string trio, percussion, soprano and spoken word.  The words here, a meditation on womanhood, relationships, and loss, are captured in music that is both provocative and propulsive.  Anqwenique brings her remarkable voice into a chamber-work perhaps best described as New Classical Soul.

During the summer months of 2024, I was in residency and a fellow at Civitella Ranieri, a prestigious and historic retreat for internationally renown artists. While there, I met the acclaimed artist and architect, Joyce Hwang, and she invited me into her new work and installation commissioned by Civitella Ranieri.  JOY IN THE WOODS is an electronic sound-score which is comprised of the greatly slowed down sounds of bats, and the natural, otherworldly sounds of the birds, frogs, and insects that inhabit the forests surrounding the retreat grounds.

Eunbi Kim is a collaborator, creationist, and a dear friend. I am delighted to have created a new work for her, IT FEELS LIKE A MOUNTAIN, CHASING ME, for piano and (her) pre-recorded voice. The conversations on the recordings include an intimate landscape of her life as a young, ambitious and grateful, South Korean artist. She loves her music and her family. It's the type of work that makes me re-think all I am doing as a composer. I am so grateful to share this with you.
