Rhythmic drums and hearts collide,
beneath their tartan’s proud disguise.
Each soldier boy, a child inside,
beholds this dawn with hollowed eyes.
The fetor of fear and peat and sweat,
bleeding under the thunder’s moan.
They steel their hearts, lest they forget,
the men they must become.
