Something You Should Know

Duwayne Motley is an American producer based in Charleston, South Carolina. His works have appeared on the world's foremost house & deep house imprints, including Large, Nervous, Salted, iRecords and Moulton Music. His last record for us was a killer rework of the Eddie Grant song "Walking On Sunshine" (w/ Tasty Lopez). Here, he joins Kevin McKay and enlists the vocal talents of Kelli Sae. Most people will know Kelli from her work with Michael Gray (their version of the Jones Girls' "You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" is a nu-school disco banger!). She is an incredibly versatile vocalist who has recorded everything from Acid Jazz with Incognito to Afro-house with Manoo & Atjazz. "Somebody To Love" delivers a wickedly hypnotic deep house groove topped with Kelli's soulful disco song. If you were looking for a 2020s update to Miguel Campbell's "Something Special", you've just found it.

Colorjaxx is an artist we have long admired at GU. Right from his early releases on Salted and Large, his clever samples and hypnotic hooks struck a chord with us. Since then, he's delivered some deep house gems. His brilliant remix for Oliver Schories' "Clu" on Pracht was one of 2022's finest deep moments, and his "Sing The Sound" on Large is the kind of slow-burning jack we adore. During these last few years, we've been back and forth, searching for the right release for us to do. At last, with "Let Me Love You", we have found it. A superb instrumental sample with soaring 70s strings drives the groove while deep yet punchy bass underpins the song, and a sweet soul vocal tops the lot - pure house heaven.

Oscar Barila's "Miles" on Miguel Migs' Salted imprint was one of last year's best deep house cuts. Its delicious blend of smooth samples and warm rhythms made for a heady cocktail, with DJs worldwide adding it to their USBs. "Feels Right" is his first release for us this year, and if early reports are anything to go by, we have another Barila monster on our hands. A killer bassline leads the way while a wicked Rhodes lick and mesmerising vocal hook interplay to devastating effect—a proper jam.

Hreez & Monica Koleva's "Try Again" is one of our favourite releases of the year so far. We love the match-up of clever garage chords and tasteful R&B samples. We wanted a mix we could play in those deeper moments and asked Kevin McKay to flip it. For this, he's taken us back to his 90s deep house roots with a wonderfully stripped New Jersey jam.
