Jenny was a girl with her head in her hands,
Jenny didn’t want to be seen
Jenny hid away, where no-one could see her,
in her room where the carpets were green.

Jimmy was a boy who took on the world,
Jimmy couldn’t shout any louder
Jimmy, always sure about what he was doing,
in his heart he couldn’t be any prouder.

Jane was a girl who just didn’t know,
Jane, she was one or the other,
Jane, she was hiding, but then she was strong,
and she fought more with herself than any other.

Then one day the undead came,
eating eyes and guts and brains 
So I wonder what became of 
Jenny, Jimmy, and our Jane.

Jane was a girl who just didn’t know,
she hid a while and then went fighting, 
but she didn’t take the time to arm herself well,
then spent eternity gnawing and biting.

Jimmy was a boy who faced up the world,
the zombies couldn’t take on his might, 
but he thought he knew best and when he let down his guard,
they caught him and he died in fright. 

Jenny was a girl with her head in her hands,
Jenny watched it all on the Telly, 
she barricaded, hid away,
then starved to death,
on her floor she turned to bones and jelly.

Moral of this story is no matter what you’re like,
when the undead walk the earth,
my friend you’re sure to die!!

This piece was written during the Choral Chameleon Summer Institute 2017 in Brooklyn, New York. It was premiered and recorded by the Choral Chameleon Singers at St Paul's Episcopal Church on June 30th 2017, conducted by Vince Peterson.

My Hiding Place (Psalm 32)

'Adiraï' in the Guernesais language means 'misplaced'. In June 1940 the Channel Islands were given the ultimatum to either stay on their Islands under Nazi rule, or leave. As a result, many families made the hard decision to send their children to England whilst the parents stayed behind to try and keep the family home. Upon the Liberation of the islands on May 9th 1945, these children then returned home to an alien world, where they no longer spoke the language and everything looked the same, yet different at the same time. 

This piece was commissioned by the Young New Yorkers Chorus' as a finalist of the Young Composer Competition 2018. Written for the combined forces of the YNYC Mixed Ensemble and Women's Ensemble, it was premiered on March 24th 2018 in St Michael's Episcopal Church, Manhatten New York, conducted by Michael Kerschner. It was subsequently chosen as the winner of the competition, winning the Nathan Davis Prize in Composition for 2018.
