“Whose Swamp Is It Anyway?” (“WSIIA?”) (2015) is an experimental hip-hop composition that traces a protagonist’s relationship with the award-winning animated film Shrek (DreamWorks, 2001) and its titular ogre character. “WSIIA?” was created in EarSketch, a coding-based DAW developed by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and my program was written in JavaScript.

The composition was inspired by Shrek’s idiosyncratic fan subculture, which — by way of websites such as 4chan, Reddit, and YouTube — has reimagined the film’s crude satire of Disney fairytales as fodder for pun-filled memes and absurdist, sexualized fanfiction. “WSIIA?” posits the act of embracing Shrek fandom as an immersive endeavor that begins with harmless nostalgia but ultimately brainwashes the actor into praising Shrek like a deity and submitting to his demands. Rather than merely referencing the inside jokes and iconography that unite members of Shrek’s fan subculture, “WSIIA?” presents a personal interpretation of Shrek fandom that seeks to unsettle and sonically envelop the listener.
