Silent Waves

Oona Dahl joined us at All Day I Dream last year both as a DJ and recording artists. Her first release 'high eyes'  was featured on our summer sampler and floated onto the dance floor and into the consciousness of DJ's around the world. Oona studied sound design in the USA before moving to Berlin over the summer of 2015 to continue honing and crafting her sound.  Her first full EP for ADID features deep dreamscapes and innovative arrangements underpinned by solid grooves that capture emotive, twisted melodic expressions. She and her music are a trip to the depths.

Lucky number thirteen on San Francisco's @Manjumasi comes from label co-founder Atish. Following hot on the heels of last year's solo debut "Peculiar Colors," Atish returns to the label in fine form with a trio of collaborations. Each named after an amphibian or reptilian creature, the three tracks showcase Atish's musical range.

First up is Bullfrog, produced together with fast-rising German talent @timengelhardt. A chunky percussive bass groove drifts over liquid smooth lily-pads, laying a foundation for the quirky, croaking synth riff that makes the track's heady hook. Second on the package is Chameleon, a collaboration with label co-founder @mcslee. This one is a driving melodic groover that oscillates between musical colors, with a light floating pad melody and slip-sliding glissando synth playing counterpoint to edgy stabs. Rounding out the package is Tortoise, a team effort with SF talent @bengalsf. Like the animal, this tune is slow-moving and wise, demonstrating strength through patience in the form of a groove that gently meanders and builds with rich detail.

SHADY (Pieter De Meester and Maxim Helincks) are one half of the band Stavroz, and 2020 drove them from a frenzied international touring schedule to a period of relative quiet. While other musicians tried to capture the gravity of lockdown, SHADY used their time to cook up joyous prankster music, something refreshingly at odds with the global zeitgeist.

On ‘Your Skin’, the pair channel the wonky surrealism of Connan Mockasin, the understated swagger of Nicolas Jaar’s low end, and the tomfoolery of a Mighty Boosh crimp. The song invokes a carefree future where clubs have reopened and sweaty, raving humans rub bare shoulders on a full-swing dancefloor. ‘I wanna touch your skin’, croon Helincks and De Meester in a cellophane falsetto… well, hopefully soon.

Sydney’s Dreems (aka Angus Gruzman) takes SHADY’s original off-road. The notoriously eclectic co-founder of Multi Culti records delivers a cheeky Balearic take, switching to a major key and adding a lolloping low end while maintaining SHADY’s low-tempo chug. Anyone who appreciates the optimistic psychedelia of Acid Pauli is likely to get drawn into this one.

For his remixes, label boss Uone teams up with his long-time Auckland collaborators Out of Sorts. Between them, they invert SHADY’s colours to produce something deep-hued, with a long bassline that’ll appeal to fans of Silicone Soul and vintage Luke Chable. The vocal remix takes ‘Your Skin’ into late night territory, and the dub remix is a step darker, recalling the Rainbow Serpent Festival dusty dance floor moments.
