Introducing 'Soulé,' the first single from the highly anticipated upcoming album 'A place between us.' by Okvsho (@Soulofzurich). Emerging from a jam session gathering the blossoming young jazz scene of Capetown during Okvsho’s South Africa Tour, the composition invites listeners to surrender to its evolving cadence, meandering through a tapestry of groovy percussions, silky chord progressions and a symphony of delicate guitar licks and grounding string arrangements.

“As we couldn’t take our band to South Africa and Eswatini, we found different musicians for every gig we played through Instagram and with the help of the people we met during our journey. We played different versions of Soulé at every gig, but only after our last show in Cape Town, we knew where this song was going. Back in Zurich we started to record with some of our long-time collaborators and friends and Soulé emerged, a beautiful collaboration between Cape Town and Zurich.”

“At the start of the song you can hear the legendary saxophonist Mthunzi Mvubu asking “in riddim?” after we asked him to use the saxophone as a percussion instrument during a recording session in Johannesburg.”

‘Expansion’ is the second single from Melbourne-based, Finn Rees’ forthcoming debut album, Dawn Is A Melody. A Brazilian-inspired, spirit-embracing jazz immersion, that nods to greats like Luiz Eça, Dom Salvador and Cesar Camargo Mariano yet showcases the vibrancy of Finn’s contemporary palette. 

Further illuminating the microcosm of colour that is Dawn Is A Melody, ‘Expansion’ explores the connection between the worldly and those cosmic realms that float in between, with the help of some of Melbourne’s finest musicians. Igniting the track, Lucky Pereira’s exquisite drumming marries with Blakely McLean Davies’ strutting double bass playing, as a Latin touch shines through Dom Kirk’s percussion. 

Sitting at the helm, Finn’s signature mastery across the keys from the ‘70s Yamaha grand piano to the warming tones of the Rhodes, elevate your mind to a weightless dimension. Enhancing those earthly measures, he taps into the cosmic-channelling Moog to add an undertone of interstellar electronics.  A foundation that gives ground for the triplet of horns to form a harmonious unison, Audrey Powne on trumpet, Cheryl Durongpisitkul on tenor sax, Josh Moshe on alto sax, all gliding as one. 

Both grounded and galactic, it’s an intricate, soulful and spiritual jazz journey with a depth and richness that is perfectly saturated by recording and mix engineer Henry Jenkin’s vintage recording setup.

Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning “from the heart,” and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album by Orquesta Akokán feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. Assembled and led by Cuban vocalist José “Pepito” Gómez, Orquesta Akokán is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. It features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at Havana’s hallowed state-run Estudios Areito.  Areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important Cuban records have been made.  The album was produced by Jacob Plasse and arranged by Mike Eckroth.

A “miramar” is a place from which you can see the ocean. The bolero group, Miramar, chose this word as their name to evoke a place of peace, reflection and solace for a broken heart. Even the bolero, a romantic music born in Cuba in the 1800’s, might have been conceived by the seaside. In the 50’s and 60’s it became the quintessential musical expression of romance in Latin America. It is this era of the music from which Miramar draws their inspiration. “Urgencia”, or “urgency”, tells of the desperation a heart feels when it is swept away by romance, but risks all for fear of not having another chance at love. The flip, “Salida” means “a way out.” It is a song about the surrender that comes after trying to break free from the darkest of places, of endless frustration and sadness. The lyrics allude, but never tell. Produced by Giancarlo Luiggi & Victor Axelrod.

Look who's back! Just in time for your late summer soirées, Doug "Master Plan" Shorts offers up another pair of modern soul movers guaranteed to tear up the club and backyard boogie-downs alike. The A-Side, Get with the Program, drops hard with a bass line and groove reminiscent of ESG at their best, but the relaxed feel and smooth vocal lend the tune a sophistication that elevates it to another level altogether. As Doug pleads with his potential lover to "Get with the Program" it's hard not to imagine that he's also speaking to the greater soul community. For those not already down with Doug's program, now's the time...act like ya know!  On the flip we find our protagonist pleading with yet another prospective ladylove, this time accompanied by a bouncy, mid-tempo groove and Mary Jane-esque synth line. "Heads or Tails" would have been well at home on Chicago's boogie scene in the early '80s, but it doesn't ever sound dated.
