I spent a number of weeks in pockets of the Amazon rainforest recording natural sounds. These are juxtaposed with mechanical sounds from modern human culture. This extract is taken from a 45min piece for a contemporary dance production, Shakram Dance Co., The Anima and the Aminus.

When There Was Jamming 2019

Dara O’Brien is a composer, music educator and performer (sitar, guitar) based in Cork. He completed his PhD at UCC School of Music where he lectures in Indian classical music and improvisation, and teaches sitar. He also works as a music therapist in the field of autism. He studied in India over many years under his mentor, Sougata Roy Chowdhury. 

His eclectic experience as a composer and performer includes ‘global fusion’, Indian classical music, jazz, rock, experimental sound, film, and music for contemporary dance. He is founder of Rasa Nua, a quartet blending Indian, Baltic and jazz music through original compositions.

Dara has extensive experience composing and performing music for contemporary dance to critical acclaim. He has worked with a wide range of companies and choreographers in theatre productions, film and installation.
