It’s always a pleasure when this week’s special guest takes the controls of our weekly Traxsource LIVE! show - or curates a DJ chart, or invites us into his studio for a Traxsource Inside The Track feature or a Traxsource Jam - pretty much anything for that matter!

An immensely talented producer and DJ with over twenty years in the game, Opolopo’s productions have been snapped up by all the big players (Local Talk, Reel People, Z Records, Defected, Quantize, GOGO, Toolroom amongst others) and in a life somewhere pre-pandemic, a gig schedule that kept him on the move from London to Tokyo and the world over, on rotation.

Opolopo often gives us an insight into his aspirations for quality and the calibre of music writing through his collaborations and the vocalists that he chooses to work with: Grammy nominated vocalist Gregory Porter, Omar, Steve Arrington, Lisa Stansfield (THE Lisa Stansfield!) The Sunburst Band, Leroy Burgess and a world of other leading lights in music.

With a steady flow of solid releases and regular appearances toward the upper end of our annual Traxsource Top 100’s  (#4 Top 100 Soulful House Artists ‘15, #6 in ‘18 and the #1 Soulful House Track in ‘18, #5 Top 100 Soul/Funk/Disco Artists in ‘19) it was only a matter of time before he dropped ‘Sickla’, the hotly anticipated 3-part album on Local Talk. Playing other peoples music for other peoples enjoyment since 1993.

Darius is a self proclaimed "House Addict".  He fell in love with the house sound as a teenager living in Montreal back in the early '90s when he would stay up late on Friday nights and record a dance mix show on Montreal radio.  He was hooked from then on.  He then proceeded to start mixing with one tape deck and a CD player and never looked back.  

When he moved to Vancouver in the late '90's, he started buying records almost daily and spent most of his free time at his favourite record stores at the time, Bassix and Mekanix records.  Over the next few years, Darius held various residencies and ran 2 club nights in Vancouver, playing alongside such talent as Lawnchair Generals and Johnny Fiasco, as well as playing at numerous after hours and raves.   After getting tired of both the late nights and politics in the scene, he decided it was time to hang up the headphones in the early 2000s, but the love of house music still burned inside of him as the years passed. 

In 2013 he decided he wanted to get back into DJ'ing and purchased a basic Pioneer controller and started to collect digital tracks again.  Over the past few years Darius has been busy making a name for himself in the underground scene with numerous guest mix appearances around the world on such labels as House Salad, Reason2Funk, Uglyhouse, Little Routine, Selecta Music, Leven Underground and House Jet Radio just to name a few.  He also started the very popular "SPEED BUMPS" mix series which showcases his love for hip hop and jazz as he shows his versatility as a DJ by blending mixes of nu jazz, hip hop instrumentals and acid jazz flavours reminiscent of Mark Farina's legendary series, Mushroom Jazz. 

He also launched the hugely successful "Soul Room Sessions" podcast showcasing the soulful and jazzy side of house music and downtempo beats with guest mixes from some of the biggest names in the game and the series is still going strong!

In 2017 Darius got his first taste of out of town gigging playing live shows all over the West Coast from his hometown in Vancouver, to San Francisco and Oakland.  Stay tuned for much more from him in the near future!
