What's shakin' funky people?!?  We are back with Volume 214 of the series and we are thrilled to welcome fellow Vancouverite, DJ Bradley Be to Soul Room Sessions!

Bradley’s interest in music started at the age of 5 when he bought my first record, but it wasn’t until he was 9 that his passion for music truly began. At the age of 12, he organized a hip hop party at a local youth center where he first started DJing. He promoted the party for six months and built up a following of around 50 people. However, as hardcore music became more popular, he decided to try his hand at it. Although he found mixing hardcore music difficult, he was fortunate to be introduced to house and garage music, which ended up being his forte.
This led to an opportunity to play at a local nightclub called Rackets (Essex), where he warmed up for DJ Disciple. Following this gig, a promoter offered him a residency at the Playground (Essex), where he warmed up for various top DJs, including Danny Bhudda Morales, Normski, Bobbi and Steve, and Boy George, among others.
During his time as a house and garage DJ, he met Graham Gold, whom he considers to be one of the best DJs in the industry. After a short time, they became good friends, and through their friendship, Bradley had the opportunity to travel around England with him. On more than one occasion, he him play live sets at Kiss FM Studio, which led to introductions to all the top DJs, such as Judge Jules, Paul Trouble Anderson, and the Kiss FM crew. With all the experience he gained from these encounters, Bradley was able to learn a lot from the people he met.
From that point on, his DJ career took off, and he began playing at various venues across England, Europe, and the world.

A pillar of the West Coast and American dance music scenes, Galen perfected his skills in the ’90s on long and eclectic DJ sets at renegade & warehouse parties.

First among them: his own Sunset Sound System events, a DIY happening in which he played adventurous sets every Sunday in a park framed by the setting sun, the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge.

With some friends in common, we’ve been meaning to interview Galen for years, and took the opportunity presented by the release of his new Magic Bus EP, out May 9 on Justin Martin’s What To Do label. We’re honored to share this new cover mix as well, which Galen made exclusively for 5 Mag.

GREG WILSON’S EARLY 80’S FLOORFILLERS: 
A fascinating insight on how the fading Jazz-Funk scene gave way to the emerging Electro-Funk movement in the early 80’s, ‘Greg Wilson’s Early 80’s Floorfillers’, marks the 30th anniversary of when these tracks first appeared. Compiled from his record lists of the time, and unfolding month by month, Greg Wilson counts down the Top 10 Floorfillers played at his venues during the key years of ’82 and ’83. Featured, most notably, on his Tuesday sessions at Wigan Pier and Wednesday gatherings at Legend in Manchester, the most cutting-edge weekly black music nights of the era, these were the clubs most associated with the evolving Electro-Funk sound.

The majority of music played on the black scene in the UK was initially only available on import, mainly out of New York during this period, with the club nights described as ‘upfront’, meaning that the DJ’s were way ahead of the curve – what they played now, others played later, or not at all. Without these DJ’s, many now classic dance tracks would never have become UK hits (many without enjoying similar crossover success in the US) – the reason they were released here in the first place was because these specialist DJ’s were breaking them via the underground.

Things would change in a big way during those 2 years; we were entering the hybrid age for dance music, and the oncoming House and Techno and Hip Hop directions would all owe a huge debt to this era of dance alchemy and groove experimentation.

Playing other peoples music for other peoples enjoyment since 1993.

Darius is a self proclaimed "House Addict".  He fell in love with the house sound as a teenager living in Montreal back in the early '90s when he would stay up late on Friday nights and record a dance mix show on Montreal radio.  He was hooked from then on.  He then proceeded to start mixing with one tape deck and a CD player and never looked back.  

When he moved to Vancouver in the late '90's, he started buying records almost daily and spent most of his free time at his favourite record stores at the time, Bassix and Mekanix records.  Over the next few years, Darius held various residencies and ran 2 club nights in Vancouver, playing alongside such talent as Lawnchair Generals and Johnny Fiasco, as well as playing at numerous after hours and raves.   After getting tired of both the late nights and politics in the scene, he decided it was time to hang up the headphones in the early 2000s, but the love of house music still burned inside of him as the years passed. 

In 2013 he decided he wanted to get back into DJ'ing and purchased a basic Pioneer controller and started to collect digital tracks again.  Over the past few years Darius has been busy making a name for himself in the underground scene with numerous guest mix appearances around the world on such labels as House Salad, Reason2Funk, Uglyhouse, Little Routine, Selecta Music, Leven Underground and House Jet Radio just to name a few.  He also started the very popular "SPEED BUMPS" mix series which showcases his love for hip hop and jazz as he shows his versatility as a DJ by blending mixes of nu jazz, hip hop instrumentals and acid jazz flavours reminiscent of Mark Farina's legendary series, Mushroom Jazz. 

He also launched the hugely successful "Soul Room Sessions" podcast showcasing the soulful and jazzy side of house music and downtempo beats with guest mixes from some of the biggest names in the game and the series is still going strong!

In 2017 Darius got his first taste of out of town gigging playing live shows all over the West Coast from his hometown in Vancouver, to San Francisco and Oakland.  Stay tuned for much more from him in the near future!
