Astral Projections 76 - Steve Roach: Early Years

"The devil is the sum of the darkness of human nature. He who lives in the light strives toward being the image of God; he who lives in the dark strives toward being the image of the devil."

It took me a little while, but here's tape number 5 in my mixtape/audio collage series!  This one is for my dear friend James.  As with previous and forthcoming tapes, each recipient got a card drawn for them as the theme of their tape, and for this one, I drew 15: the Devil.

This card is complex, and means many things in the context of the Tarot.  It can depict man at his most base, slave to animal impulses like violence and lust.  Ruled by the malefic planet Saturn, it can also signal restriction, being chained to something, represented in the Rider Waite Smith art as chains that bind the Lovers together.  As Robert Bonomo says in "The 21 Faces of God", the Devil is the last guardian we face on our journey to the Tower, the last filter of the Ego - it guards the spiritual awakening that awaits, by simply reminding us that "our passions have become our prisons".  The terror we feel when we see him is the projection of our own shadow.

I also wanted to focus on the Saturnian aspect of this card which also denotes life cycles and the passage of time (although this is more connected to The World but - whatever).  At one time, Saturn himself was a fertility god - and the Devil card itself depicts the half-goat, half-man Pan, god of the wilds.  

So, with that in mind this 90 minute audio collage is a narrative journey through the a few deadly sins: Lust, murder, revenge, violence and debauchery - but it's not all bad.  Sometimes it's necessary to get back in touch with one's animal nature - it is a part of us after all. I've got a selection of French and English proggy folk, some neofolk and some avantgarde - I do hope you enjoy it.  Lots of stuff on here from Hexagone!
