Dark, evocative beats engulfed by bold raw vocals: this is TOTEK, the genre-defying electronic project of Allysha Joy and Max Dowling.
In their own right, Allysha and Max both lay claim to an extensive musical prowess: the former as a member of the internationally-acclaimed nu-soul outfit 30/70 and her equally revered solo project, the latter as a prolific producer, performer and collaborator (Client Liaison, NO ZU, Parvyn and countless others).

Born out of burn out and edging frustration for the pace and complication of life at times, this collaboration came together almost immediately. TOTEK found itself in the dark edges, wanting to punch a little harder and move through it all quickly, boldly, unafraid in relief. The chemistry held between Max and Allysha found songs written in mere moments that expressed something new that neither artist had been able to access alone.

On face value, the six tracks on ttk.1 could feel musically divergent: representing different idioms, different tempos and different themes. Yet they are unified on a more holistic level through their energy, ethos and character. TOTEK prefers to view music in this way: what is the overall experience of a record? Pushing boundaries and eschewing conventions has been organically at the heart of TOTEK from the beginning. The process of crafting a record was no different: The artists intended to create a work that is characterful and unpredictable yet unified by a throughline of potency and intensity.

TOTEK represents a masterful coming-together of influences: a blend of multiple electronic idioms with a unique soul sensibility; channelled through two creatively potent individuals. While their music conjures shades of Dorian Concept, Jana Rush and Flying Lotus, ultimately their sound is eclectic, elusive and unique.

Hot off a string of records released on Coloring Lessons, Bliss Point, People Of Earth, and Off Track Recordings, Malik Hendricks returns to Darker Than Wax with Tessera – a fresh twelve of dancefloor cuts tinged with broken rhythms and funk-infused melodies. No stranger to the label, Malik had contributed a track on 2020’s Bodyclock Vol.1, and we are pleased to share this solo offering, backed with a remix by the hotly-tipped James Bangura.

Recorded in Brooklyn in 2020 and 2021, Tessera marks a shift in the American-born, Lisbon-based producers sonic journey. Normally a sample-focused producer, Malik’s ongoing collaborations with musicians John Barera and John Silas impacted the artist’s sound with their funky, improvisational approach and pushed him to explore his own musicality in a deeper way. The result is Tessera, four cuts of organic, modern dance music traversing shades of Midwest funk and techno, and signifying a new chapter in Malik’s craft.

Diving into the record, first single ‘Switchback’ goes in heavy with an electro-fused flavour, pairing smooth chords with raw drums. ‘Fiyahverkx’ is an 808-heavy broken techno heater, while ‘The Money Dance’ invokes daytime house vibes with a chunky analogue bassline and funky synth lines throughout. ‘Totem’ channels a rolling, percussive atmosphere, flipped by James Bangura into a driving late-night floor filler.

The future looks bright for Malik Hendricks as he jumps from strength to strength, and we are elated to provide a home to this record that marks an evolution in the artist’s sound.

Bongomann returns to Darker Than Wax with his third solo offering – the deep, dreamy, and cosmic sound of Lounge Zero. Since releasing his debut EP Smiles with the label in 2020, the artist has since released tracks with labels such as FuFu and Fauve Records, as well as dropping Wake Up/Kick On – an hour long live recording cut to cassette with Botanic Records. One to watch in the Singapore scene and a close friend of the label, Bongomann has begun a deep dive into the realm of live performance in recent years, which has heavily informed the development of his distinctive style.

At its core, Lounge Zero is a heartfelt ode to the chillout sesh, incorporating elements of ambient and downtempo to create a cohesive sonic palette and a finely curated listening journey. ‘Enter’ kicks things off with a cerebral and restrained hardware jam, patiently taking its time to explore all aspects of its aural landscape. Standout cuts ‘Settle’ and ‘Float’ welcome the listener firmly into the lounge, setting the vibe with percussive, atmospheric soundscapes. ‘Pause’ drives forward with a heady, almost trip-hop infused house beat, while ‘Rise (Ambient Mix)’ provides a reflective, beatless interlude. Breaking the mould of the EP’s downtempo theme, ‘Zoof’ closes out the release with ravey, psychedelic-infused euphoria.

This LP marks a milestone, besides being an exclusive collaboration between the labels - it also features a conglomerate of many different artistes from all over the world.

Resonating with the covert ideology and movement within the creative independent sphere in the two Metropolitan cities of Singapore and Paris - both spearheaded by dedicated locals who push to develop the alternative, forward thinking culture within their respective cities, while inadvertently appealing and reaching out to international talents and fans.

With stalwarts from the likes of Amin Payne (Australia), OhBliv (US), ILL SUGI (Japan), Samuel Truth (New Zealand), Milo Mills (Austria), Trian Kayhatu (Holland), and founders of Darker Than Wax, Cosa Nostra (Singapore) - this release speaks great volumes that yield an amazing experience.

While genres are disparate – future beats, deep house, bass etc.. – the creative concept isn’t. From the minor details of thoughts put into it, to the artistes' passion and competence, every single contribution is accounted for into making this a really special affair.

"Feelings in Colour" is the thread that weaves the music into the movement- cut from the same cloth.

These few months have been truly inspirational, with our movement gaining ground globally, forming new communities in different corners and interesting opportunities unfolding. It is to say the least, extremely gratifying to know that despite staying pretty much under the radar and not dabble heavily in that PR game, we can still evolve and touch others simply by sticking to our guns - that music should be diverse and expressed in various forms. 

To celebrate that diversity, we have put together a special compilation showcasing where our ideas are at right now. More importantly, it's a chance to introduce our entire roster, which has grown exponentially with the likes of Moods, Sh?m, KA-YU, Jasper Staal and Kerem Akdag. Its slightly unfortunate that Giorgio Oehlers is unable to make it for this compilation due to certain domestic commitments, but we feel what we have here strongly represents the ethos of DTW.

Also included in this comp are some up and comers whom we felt deserve a chance to be given the spotlight and share their sounds with a greater audience. Make a point to listen to Versailles the Everything - she's a really fresh singer / rapper out of Florida, US and has blown our ears and minds with everything that she's doing.

So we will leave it as that, and hope this collection inspires and moves you, as much as it does for us. For our regular listeners, it will occupy another essential spot in your DTW collection. For our new listeners, welcome to the DTW universe - it is only just expanding. :)

19 yr-old Classical / Jazz guitarist Melo-Zed is a rare gem in the current music scene.
His sounds are highly textured, and exude that warm fuzzy analogue feel. This is further enhanced perhaps by his incorporation of field recordings, which he conducts on a regular basis. Whether it's an original production, or reworks of Drake, he has managed to garner a steady growth of fans worldwide and it was only a matter of time before our stars were aligned, and we are blessed to announce that he is an official DTW artist.
Drawn to his flow and unique vibe, we look forward to building more creative soundscapes with this young one.

The process that led to ‘Dimensions EP’ engaged different sides of him as a well-rounded artist – growing as his music developed from straight Dilla-minded beats to more electronic songs.

He approached this first as a musician, and then a producer – working with less samples and recording live acoustic instruments – something which has always been part of work for film and radio but was never included in personal production own music, until this project.

While creating this EP had the intention of an electronic influence, it is balanced off by an earthy jazz element – he began to delve more into the acoustic-folk sound and songwriting.

The Dimensions EP is about bringing these different elements together. It stands for seeing things from new perspectives, for experiencing life's diversity. Everything is possible: it's all around you; inside, on the outside. You just have to find the dimensions, take the walls down, and bloom.

Kayloo & Silo - Cadillac

We have been waiting for this collaboration to happen. Thankfully, it did and the wait has been been worthwhile. Paris meets Leuven, where  Kayloo and Silo both compliment each other so well in 'Cadillac'. The title pretty much speaks for itself, as it is an ideal track for driving or jogging into the pink sunset. With Silo's signature chords floating over Kayloo's 808 basslines, the track builds itself into a smooth slo-mo house tempo, showcasing the duo's versatility.

It's been a min since we have our man silo grace us with a track so here's one. 'Discovery' is the perfect way to kickstart the day, and his simple but infectious melodies are always soothing to the ears.

Odin - Voices

Jason Theunissen aka Odin is a 24 yr old producer based in Nijmegen(Holland). Fueled with with a passion for music, he started DJ'ing at the age of 19 and slowly ventured into producing. After a year of working on his skills at the Herman Brood Academy, he's finally comfortable in making steps into releasing his own music. Plans on releasing his debut EP at the end of this summer is underway, but we caught up with him recently and 'Voices' is his latest joint to grace our Freebie series.

Voices is a synth-filled track, drawing a variety of influences from funk, soul and hip hop. It combines warm chords, snappy drums and a pretty mean bassline to set the scene.

The newest instalment of our Free Download series brings us to Cape Town, South Africa with a lush neo-soul/R&B cut ‘Waiting For You’ from ECHLN and Shirah Cheezer.

Kwetsima Maluleke a.k.a ECHLN (pronounced echelon) is a South African born music producer and sound engineer. He was born and raised in Pretoria and now lives in Cape Town.

As a child, he has always liked the music. As he got older, he realized that most, if not all the songs he liked were produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. Starting from the ‘Justified’ album by Justin Timberlake. This, together with Pharrell’s debut album ‘In My Mind’ made him pay more attention to music and how it’s made. Since 2009, ECHLN has been forging a unique blend of R&B and Hip Hop glued together by uniquely South African soulful elements.

Shirah Cheezer, is a singer and songwriter who grew up in Uitenhage Bredasdorp, Kimberley and now lives in Cape Town. She was raised in a strongly musical family, and has been singing in a choir from a very young age. While Shirah lends her vocals to a wide range R&B, Hip Hop and House beats, her strongest musical influence comes from her earliest roots - Gospel music.

‘Waiting For You’ is a track that's dripping with sensuality and soul, driven by a smoky beat built around Shirah’s hauntingly beautiful vocals. Play this one late at night with the lights down.

We have been keeping in touch with samsin and his music for a minute now, after stumbling upon some of his earlier works, which eventually led to two singles on our Freebie series. 
Considering that he only recently developed an interest for music production in 2015, and eventually started to take the craft seriously at the beginning of 2016, samsin has shown a certain maturity. The summer of 2016 brought more attention from his contemporaries and led to various releases.  Samsin's style always allows you to imagine yourself in another place, and each of his songs reflects a deep insight into the way he thinks about space and textures. His taste brings excitement and intricacy with vivid floating melodies, punchy drums and a delicious blend of percussion and vocal chops - something that resonates with the spirit of DTW and we warmly welcome him to our growing family of artists.

GTA FUNK' is both a reaction to and a reflection of the 'Toronto' sound, conceived during KEI-LI’s move from the suburbs of Mississauga to the city of Toronto.

The vast multiculturalism of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has given birth to a sonic diversity that goes far beyond the signature OVO sound associated with the city. With the world finally tuning in, this EP also enlists the help of fellow artists like https://soundcloud.com/robotaki, https://soundcloud.com/falcxne, https://soundcloud.com/clairmontthesecond, https://soundcloud.com/soundslikeandes and NAHTE, which allows him to showcase a funkier side to the city that the world hasn’t been acquainted with yet.

KEI-LI started producing at the age of 13, informed by his interest in beatboxing and funkstyles popping. After stumbling upon neo-soul, he immediately discovered his musical direction, with Musiq and D'Angelo as his inspirations. While these musical foundations shine brightly throughout GTA Funk, KEI-LI has managed to forge a sonic aesthetic that is entirely his own.

There is an evident struggle with finding an authentic place as an Asian artist within the continuum of funk, soul, and hip hop musical traditions. Hence, the visual branding behind GTA Funk is inspired by the intersection of these two cultures: Kung Fu and hip hop.

The debut official release on the label from Rotterdam-based @giorgio-oehlers," 'EGO’ And The Art of Letting Go”, is a reflection on the tenuous relationship between ego, creativity, and crafting a truly personal vision through art. Raised on a diet of soul, jazz, funk, r&b and fusion, Giorgio Oehlers has been quietly honing his skill, and after struggling with the pervasiveness of external pressures on his artistic process for years, the Dutch producer learned that by truly letting go of these constraints - ego, industry hype, genre conventions - and creating music solely for himself, his most meaningful work was brought to fruition.

This sentiment is beautifully communicated throughout the EP. Throughout the four-track journey exploring the different corners of Giorgio’s vision through a range of grooves, tempos, and emotions, each tune oozes with an undeniably human touch and handmade feel. From the synth-led kaleidoscope on ‘Ego Groove, the emotive boogie that drives ‘Sun Cruiser’, to the low-slung vocoder jam ‘Strangers’, and the pure sunshine of ‘Egoista’, this EP is a testament to the magic that happens when an artist looks inward and imparts a piece of themselves into their creations.

ECHLN gives a new lease of life to music coming out from South Africa. This personal twist lends an edgy take to the revered west coast sound that is reflected in his latest 4 track EP, SWAY. You hear his thoughts out loud as he

Enlisting the help of DTW mainstay silo for 'Feels So Right', with the sensual vocals of Shirah Cheezer, Hunter Rose and Vuyo Renene, an enigmatic appeal has been added to the body of his work - the overall composition of SWAY designates ECHLN as a producer at the top of his field.
