@skylinbeats' “Odyssey” is a concept album of 8 tracks building a story arc on the foundations of bass music genres such as wave, grime, dubstep and future garage.

The record is an exploration of the early “wave” sound, but even more so a work of sonic fiction melting together inspirations from dystopian cinematics, mysticism, and psychedelic imaginaries.

Sonically, the album puts a focus on atmospheric sound design and emotive synth textures, supported by furious drum programming and droning reece basslines.

From fragments of German and British rave culture to Bulgarian choirs, Chinese zithers and Japanese taiko drums, the album embodies its name in regards to its diverse instrumental palette.

“Odyssey” is a journey through many trials and tribulations, taking the listener on a path of becoming.

Our first release in 2023 comes from none other than glaswegian genrebender @Casement!

After having him play our fifth anniversary last year and hearing what his own productions have to offer, we just knew we had to get him on the roster.

‚Division‘ provides an energetic, yet uplifting vibe, drawing inspiration from US club sounds and up north UK niche music alike.

Feisty kicks are being accompanied by abstract vocals on the intro, slightly indicating what’s to come.

Once the buildup has completed, the track turns into a full on dopamine rush but still leaves enough room for entrancing variations.

The second drop’s sample choice is a not so subtle nod towards the sonic output of New Jersey, which has been a big influence on Casement’s work throughout the years.

@DjBadshape is a multi-talented artist from Leipzig,
Germany, working in the fields of design and music. The singer, producer and DJ debuted on Defrostatica Records in Summer 2021 on the various artist compilation Hybrid Hooks with “I See Red”. Her light-footed and open-minded approach to club music was premiered and reviewed with great praise by Leipzig’s electronic music magazine Frohfroh. In her first own release on the label though she puts a different emphasis. Influenced by gritty personal events @DjBadshape has written two tracks that are on the dark side of two different genres: drum and bass and techno.
Hurrican Kick is a minimal autonomic drum and bass tune carried by
instruction calls from London’s roller skater star Stormskater. Few
percussive elements are floating around a hypnotic kick pattern that soon elevates the dancer in the ‘zone’.

With it’s march-like drumwork and epic supersaw strings, REVEAL channels the powers and experiences gathered on the journey into a final confrontation. The affects of hope and strength are conveyed through massive walls of sound and high-energy bass drops.

A key moment in the narrative arc of the album is found in SPIRAL, expressing once again how both power and despair arise from dark places. Apreggiated vocaloids, disspersed and gated, are joined by monstrous midrange bass and heavy drumbeats for the runup to the final gathering before the tension finds release.

Taking a step back tempo-wise, MIRAGE paints a colder, almost glacial picture of galactic wastelands, summoned by synth pads and appreggios, reminiscent of early electronic ambient but fused with laid-back downbeats like in early Om Unit productions. A shrouded lamentation of what has been long lost and forgotten.

Earthly stages of the journey are followed up by a more cosmic twist on DIMENSION. Starting out with a proper out-of-space feeling, the tracks’ trancey synthesizers morph and transform into a powerful expression of energies and emotions.

Upon arrival at the center piece of the ODYSSEY, icy arpreggios and furious garage drums create a surreal ambience with distant lights looming in the dark, hinting at the hopeful horizons ahead.

The journey continues east with a fiercer and faster beat on KOWLOON. A concoction of hypnotic sounds and percussive elements that feels like a distant memory of traversing endless urban plains of darkness.

The overture of the album, SOFIA, casts a perspective on what’s to come. Starting off with gloomy guitar strings and crackling sounds of decaying concrete debris, the song immerses you in a melancholic, yet reverent atmosphere soon to be joined by a droning sub bass. Transendence starts right down in the depths.

You wouldn't really call Kyra a newcomer, although she started DJing only three years ago. But as a music passionist from day one with her father being a musician and audio engineer, she started her musical journey very early. She grew up listening to punk, 90's, experimental sounds, self-recorded tapes as well as soul in her children's room. You would meet her often at underground events in Berlin as a guest but in the last years even more behind the decks. All these influences and events merge into her eclectic DJ sets where her love for bass music meets her enthusiasm for instruments, organic sounds and singing, especially soul and musicals. Over the years she developed an addiction to soundtracks, bass driven music, as well as drums, rhythms, experimental, darker and melodic/harmonic soundscapes.
Always open to explore old and new fields, she is playing genre-fluid and likes mixing different genres together (to push the boundaries of musical limitations (just) a bit more.) As our approach has always been "no genre-boundaries" DARK REAL DARK is very happy to present you her mix for our podcast series, which matches this attitude perfectly.

The Hamburg - Berlin connection is strong at DARK REAL DARK. Not only because many of our members are living in these two cities, but there's also constant interaction and conversations between crews and artists from the German capital and the northern bass hub. 

One of the interesting new faces of Bassmusic there is Sarah Q, who blessed us with a stunning mix for our podcast series.

Music has always fascinated Sarah endlessly - ever since her brain started forming thoughts and maybe even before that. Her first rave experiences were key moments and she immediately knew that she wanted to DJ, but it took some years to move from the dancefloor behind the decks. It all started with her and DJ Babyblade (fka Claud) playing a back-to-back set for the capsule livestream. Shortly after, Freddy Kuno gathered Usus, Selsela, and Sarah Q to form the crew KINETIK SESSIONS. They started throwing small parties at Astrastube and also had slots at Waagenbau and Fusion Festival. In recent months, Sarah represented the crew at renowned clubs like Uebel & Gefährlich, Golden Pudel, and Südpol among others.

Her podcast for DARK REAL DARK features a mixture of deep and dubby afrobeat tunes with a dark tone running through the whole mixtape. Get ready for some future shit from Hamburg!

Common Mob is a DJ, vocalist and promoter based in Dresden.

Raised in the mountains of eastern Germany he is deeply connected to nature, understands sound as a medium to communicate across far distance and music as driving force to gather the tribe.
His DJ sets are moving straight forward through uneven terrains such as Grime, Dubstep, Halftime Drum'n'Bass and Footwork, ready to cross every obstacle and break down all barriers when roaring from a sound system. In 2021 he started producing first tunes and performed lyrics on Dj sets.
Since then he played several shows at parties and festivals with Rap phenomena Kreis01.
Next to several years organization of „Waldfloor“ at the event series „Krach am Bach – Oberpöbel Musik Fest“ and „Pochwerk Orange“ at Putzmühle, he's throwing parties in Dresden and surroundings with Pamb Sound crew and their handbuildt soundsystem.
As founding member of Subkontra collective he has been  organizing Bass Music open airs with two sound system floors, interactive and educational programs.
For the mycelium's sake the idea is to invite different sound systems every year.
In 2023 Subkontra will turn into a festival taking place from 21st to 23rd July in Oberpöbel.
With his work he is contributing to electronic music scene's biodiversity as a source of resilience and supporting growth of a strong eco system of cultural activists.

Deeply grounded while lost in bass, Common Mob brings wild forest energy to the dance floor.

Tommy Lexxus is a key figure in Berlin bass music circles and has been a Soundboy since day one. He's been a vinyl collector from his childhood days, played drums & bass guitar in bands since 1989 and picked up DJing at the age of 18 around 1995. He witnessed the birth of jungle firsthand, a genre which served as a gateway for his interest in the world of electronic music. Now 24 years later he runs his own label @bassismrecords, is a resident at @voidberlin and puts on nights at @Yaam-Berlin. It's safe to say that he has been in the game for longer than a lot of us have been alive and his 2-hour submission is more than proof of that!

His podcast covers all aspects of the world within 170bpm, from funky uplifting vibes to serious dub pressure, to rolling killers with a focus on percussion and even a little low-fi hip hop treat - you can't foresee which direction the next tune is going to take, which makes this mix incredibly refreshing.

Dark Real Dark Podcast #15 - Tommy Lexxus

If you are talking about dedication in pushing dubstep vibes in Berlin, there is literally no way around mentioning @deejay-saiman. Being an active DJ since 1996 and a resident at Impulse Berlin since 
2010 he has played countless venues & parties throughout the city. He also acts as one of the promoters of the annual Tief Frequenz Festival, a regular meet up of German Bass musicians.
With dub/triphop/dubstep Band BRAINTHEFT he toured through Europe and played at Dubstep raves in all of Germany, Berlin included, as well as internationally. 

Over 2/3 of his podcast consists of dubs, which he got cut to vinyl dubplates. The motivation to do this comes from multiple aspects. Firstly, Vinyl is the format he grew up with being a DJ and it feels the most natural to him. Secondly, it forces him to have a more limited, but maybe even more conscious selection of tunes due to the fact that 
cutting dubplates is not exactly a cheap hobby.

His mix fluctuates from dark & moody atmospheric bits through dubbed out steppers to bass-face demanding rollers, eventually sprinkling in a few vocal tracks which immediately get stuck in your 
brain.

In this podcast, we present David Garage(@tohuwabohu) who has actively been shaping the bass scene in Hamburg since 2008. As a member of the music collective „Club27“, he and Benny G formed a crew named „Tohuwabohu“. The release of their album "Lost in Grime" was followed by the remix EP "Lost in the Mix" which featured new interpretations of local producers & DJs. Eventually, nowadays he devotes himself mostly to spin vinyl. As part of the „GrimeGrimeGrime“ crew, he hosts parties in the city's best-known clubs like „Astrastube“, „Hafenklang“ and „Übel & Gefährlich“. Influenced by „the early days“ grime, he quickly discovered his love for other genres such as garage and dub. This podcast clearly reflects his full musical range and starts with ghosty dub sounds which develop into classic grime bits as the mix progresses. In the middle of the set David Garage refreshes with playful melodies and mash-ups. 
The second half of the podcast David dedicates entirely to 2-Step and
Garage Beats. You can expect a mature, dance-like interplay of English club culture!

Dark Real Dark Podcast #21 - David Garage

The London born DJ @Skain started out rinsing UK garage and d’n’b back in the day when it was all about the Soho basement of Black Market records and being heard on pirate radio. By the early 2000’s excursions to influential club nights such as Nag Nag Nag and the Z-Shed gave him his ambisexual ghetto technique that has permeated his sets throughout the continent.

When DJ @Skain moved to Berlin in 2009 he found a moody electronic scene that was stuck in hamstrung formulaic structures. The time was ripe to create a new counter dance floor culture and so MEGA BUFF was born - a high octane club workout plan that is all about ripping and slicing alternating music styles. Since its inception the MEGA BUFF squad has grown to include DJs, producers, illustrators, beat boxers and they host regular events in and around Berlin.

This podcast explores themes of love, rejection, and sexual favours through a sonic minefield of sub low frequencies, footwork, Detroit booty bass, hardcore, jungle, electro beats, and pornography.

Dark Real Dark Podcast #24 - DJ Skain

The latest addition to our series comes from Berlin-based kiwi @sammybee-1. After leaving the stomping grounds of New Zealand she spent some time in Hamburg before eventually relocating to Berlin in the summer of 2013. In the following years she truly embedded herself into the local scene and has become a household name for deep dubstep and halftime drum'n'bass.

Her event series @deviatemate provides an alternative perspective on well-trodden formulas within bass music and couldn't be described better than through the term's definition itself - "depart from usual or accepted standards". The motivation and drive for the event came from wanting to create a platform (not just a party) that supports the less known or up and coming DJs/Producers while also giving space to female-identifying artists and encourage their participation in the less mainstream DnB and bass music scene.

The mix features over 45 minutes of intense, primarily percussion-driven tunes, ranging from spiritualistic to nightmarish, from dubby to rolling and finally, a very grounding, yet uplifting outro. A great representation of what to expect for this Saturday's Deviate 2nd birthday party at Panke, which you should not miss!

Dark Real Dark Podcast #25 - Sammy B

Influenced by his older brother’s CD collection of 90’s Ninja Tune albums and artists like Wagon Christ, Amon Tobin, Björk, as well as drum’n’bass legends like DJ TeeBee & K, Goldie and Klute, Martin Hyca started collecting drum’n’bass vinyl in the late 00’s before finally stepping behind the decks for the first time as @djagem in 2012. Two years later he relocated to Berlin where he faced a not-so-unexpected problem: compared to Prague, pretty much nobody cared about his favourite Subtitles records in the city of Tresor and Berghain. 

Shortly after connecting with the Lauschangriff-based Physics crew in 2014, Martin’s new project was born: Blasted - an underground event series focusing on techy, deep and melancholic drum’n’bass, with a notable soft spot for the sound of late 90’s and early 00’s. Representing and cultivating a 

distinctive sound rather than following recent trends, Blasted has gained a solid position in Berlin’s drum’n’bass landscape and has been played by most of the local heroes as well as some of the nicest Czech DJs. 

In his contribution to the Dark Real Dark podcast, DJ Agem reaches for some rather forgotten records along with some true anthems. Running at below 170 bpm, the tempo of the mix might seem a bit too slow from today’s point of view; however, most of these records are actually pitched up! Bringing together tracks by artists like Babylon Timewarp and Psion, Omni Trio and Polar, Agem’s mix is a mysterious journey through distant valleys on the deeper side of drum’n’bass.

@Elfaux caught our attention due to the fact, that we played the same event last year. After mere minutes into her set, it became clear - we absolutely NEED her on our podcast series!
In the last few years, she played and organized parties and festivals and is well connected with different collectives in Leipzig and Berlin.
A lot of friendships were established in Dresden, her former place of residence, and within it’s small but diverse scene. 
She recently moved to Berlin to work in urban development as she feels the topic is important to society as a whole.

The mix symbolizes her nervousness during the Corona time, which is caused by an extreme undersupply of possibilities to dance. 
It contains a few of her favorite oldies as well as newly discovered goldies, bundled into a genre bending experience somewhere between electronic wonky with a penchant for juke footwork avant-garde electro, old school rave, and a few grime and RnB influences.

Elfaux embraces breaches in BPM and rhythm - in fact, this is where her alias stems from: No matter if a mistake is intentional or not, it makes the music more interesting and more experienceable.

Dark Real Dark Podcast #32 - Elfaux.

@Scratchynski’s musical journey started in with techno in 1998 and faded into house in the early 2000s. From 2008 on, Dubstep and Grime dominated his musical interest. That led to the monthly event series ‘Sub der Republik’, from which the Sub Sickness crew emerged. That strongly influenced the Dresden bass music scene as they provided top-class guest performances by Mala, Om Unit, Kahn, Eprom, and many more. As musical style boundaries never were Scratchynski’s thing, his selection of electronically infected Hip Hop á la Flying Lotus and the Gaslamp Killer in combination with the first Footwork releases already met wide-open ears at the time. This is particularly true for the Funky Monkey events, when Scratchynski, DNZ, and east enter the DJ Spaceship and play entire nights together on 4 decks and 3 mixers. His solo sets are characterized by all the influences that shaped his musical path - an eclectic mix of Hip Hop, Glitch, Juke, Future Beatz, and a good portion of bass. You can hear it regularly on the @InfiniteSequence series and the corresponding monthly podcast. Besides his activities as DJ and promoter, Scratchynski is one of the founders of the Dresden based DAVE Festival.

The formula of his podcast consists of a well-balanced mixture of Rap, Grime, UK & international Drill, Dubstep, and thumping beats and is rounded up to perfection with razor-sharp transitions, that will make a DJs heart jump in excitement.
