This is a regular mix for the DARKROOM podcast, created by FATÄK (Leila Belangeon, @leilabelangeonbouaziz) – a musician and producer living between Paris and Copenhagen; she is also a co-founder of the cassette label Subversif (@subversif-label), and a curator of events at the intersection of fashion and art.

FATÄK is interested in the absolute widest range of styles and genres: from noise and industrial to footwork and hip-hop. FATÄK’s mix is an original look at cultural blending in the era of a glocalization. Built in ternary form, it smoothly, almost imperceptibly, flows from one state to the next, embodying simultaneous unity and fragmentation, achieving a peculiar effect of hypnosis and the fascination of another culture.

The transparent synthscape is a reference to classic ambience albums. A melancholic ethnography of field recordings, the expressive bricolage from contrasting sound textures and techniques, as well as delayed rhythms, dark melodies, and distant echoes of ghostly sounds round out the mix.

DARKROOM Podcast 005 - Fatäk

DARKROOM's sixth podcast is the creation of DJ East Era (@east_era), also known as Annes Zia (Anastasia Kasimova), a St. Petersburg native who entered the DJ booth at the age of 14. Taking her first steps in underground techno and breakbeat, Anastasia moved on to trance music, gaining recognition both locally and internationally by performing at major European festivals. Having enriched her sound palette with trance techniques, she returned to techno a few years back under the stage name of East Era but kept her signature psychedelic vibe. East Era has released records with such labels as HeadZone and Forestdelic Records. 
 
From the first minutes, East Era takes us on a dynamic journey across a layered sound space with an almost visible tangibility to it, where refined Swedish sound meets an authentic Oriental ambience. The moderate tempo of the entire mix is balanced out with intensive groove escalations, which results in a meditative yet ecstatic effect. Pushing our way through dissociative, polyrhythmic constructions, we find ourselves in the abstract territory of high-frequency minimalism. 

Incessantly changing the listener's optics for over an hour, East Era, like a shaman, weaves sound patterns in her own pace, changes the mood, and eventually immerses the listener in a truly trance-like state.

DARKROOM Podcast 006 - East Era

A new mix for DARKROOM Podcast is fresh from Istanbul's musical underground. Young DJ Rhodium (@rhodium45rh) has recorded an hour of moderately somber techno, diverse both in spirit and in textures. 

In her sets, Rhodium always tries to tell a story — through rhythm, dark chords, meticulous mixing, and impeccable symmetry. Her attention to detail is an unmistakable sign that we are looking at a true music connoisseur and record digger. 

Multilayered and multidirectional percussion with an emphasis on hypnotic riffs fuses into a steady, viscous stream. Harsher sounds, almost industrial in quality, give way to dreamy crescendos that reach unexpected emotional heights.
