Late last year, after sharing some stuff I'd made, a Flight Rising friend approached me to ask if I was taking commissions. I wasn't yet, as I didn't feel ready, but I figured if I was gonna have to take that step, a friend would be the best first client I could hope for.

Unfortunately, the exact landscape as described was tricky to pull off on free software with free soundfonts (none of the ideal instruments were available to me, alas), but I managed to work around it thanks to some ethnic eastern soundfonts, and I'm rather pleased with the end result.

From the commissioner:
The lore centers around a desert kingdom where the civilians are treated well and go about their daily lives with little qualms. Or at least that's the perception. The Kingdom is ruled by a tyrant King, who's reach and wrath know no bounds. The music represents the Kingdom, one of light and life, though underneath lies something more sinister.

Midsummer Bazaar

Throughout the year I've had a few fortunate strokes of luck, and one of them was getting to make acquaintances with Loimu. After that though, and while randomly getting my feet wet with working with other people on pieces, I decided to fly the idea with her, see if she'd be okay with my making something for her with her input.

This one had two modes: standstill and full throttle throughout the entire time I spent on it. I could either go weeks without touching it, or I was working on it non-stop. I think it kinda shows in the hectic tone of a few sections, but I like to think there's some charm to that :)

Forest Wanderer

So one of my favorite artists from way back when I originally discovered the furry fandom fifteen years ago is Ultraviolet. Her art and character have always been among my favorite, always inspiring me to be creative, and her Ukimori species is a prime reason why I have now ended up biased towards deer and cloven hooves. I've always wanted to do some kind of gift art for her, and so when I randomly ran into her on Telegram, I approached her, asked her if I could, and went with it. It took me a few months due to running into hiccups, but I think the wait was worth it :D

Witch of the Forest

Rather recently, while sharing art in a Discord server, I somehow managed to land a second commission for myself. This one went MUCH faster than last one, only taking three days total, and I fully blame that on the total fluke that is the staccato G and A notes. I simply noticed that through my chord progression every single chord had not only an A or G note, but it was always at the bottom. So I decided to have fun with it and lo and behold. Tbh after that I could've thrown just about anything on top and it would've sounded well, but given what I'd worked out with the commissioner I was limited to jazz and blues ensemble instruments (and a bit of string because Reasons) and I've gotta say, for this being my first time working with saxophones? Damn, they're easy to make sexy.

Just One More

Early in the year, my fiancée asked if I could make something soothing, simple, predictable for her that could lull her to sleep. Somehow my brain decided an ostinato was the way to go and so this entire thing is ostinato town and me trying to figure out how to inject enough variation and change to keep it from being boring and repetitive to the point of annoyance. I like to think it was a success :)

For Nero

I randomly got a beat in my head one day. I decided to throw some music on top of it. Then I decided that that music should vaguely follow my cringe-worthy attempt at making a theme for my oldest OC. Somehow, I put this together in under ten hours total, spread across two days, it was almost magical :)

Darkfire

The thing that started off the year for me in a way; I was asked if I could provide examples of what I could make by someone working on a mod for a dinosaur game. They gave me a basic idea and I ran with it; turned out better than I expected originally!

Lost

So I completely forgot to upload this one!

Somewhere around late-November-early-December I joined an artist secret santa, and I got ThaboMeerkat as my giftee (you can find his channel over here: https://www.youtube.com/ThaboMeerkat).

Naturally, I did my best to encompass the positive vibes just dripping from his channel :D

The Bright Side

First piece of 2021! And I don't think I could've asked for a better way to start the year. This piece is the first of four I was asked to make by other players in the browser game Flight Rising as part of a community program called "foddart" (that would take quite a bit of explaining and is beside the point anyway). This one is for Alphazi.

I started with this one first because the information given to me gave me all kinds of ideas for the instrumentation: this theme is for the matriarch of a dragon clan and the clan itself - a ragtag collection of wayward souls. Naturally, "ragtag" called for unorthodox and varied instrumentation, so I ended up using instruments from damn near every continent - and I've got to say I'm in love with the end result. Enjoy! :D
