Since working on “Demam Cinta'' with Kel Wen as KHAI back in 2021; our back and forth conversations since have been filled with shared ideas and sound concepts that would often result in the production of many other concept demos that would be kept in our creative vault guarded for a future release. One of these concept demos was a cover of P. Ramlee’s rendition of “Gambus Jodoh” from the soundtrack of the 1964 Malay film ‘Madu Tiga’. One day after receiving an acapella recording via WhatsApp of Kel Wen singing “Gambus Jodoh” in the original half-time 92BPM structure, I took the acapella to work with by infusing hip-hop drum samples at 103BPM into the production to sonically modernize “Gambus Jodoh”. Kel Wen re-recorded his vocals to the new instrumentation and that resulted in the first stage demo recording of “Gambus Jodoh”. I understood how much of an important influence P. Ramlee was in Kel Wen’s art and for the KLFW 2023 runway presentation, I created a runway mix consisting of a chopped and screwed extended version of our “Gambus Jodoh” first stage demo; highlighting the dramatic string arrangement and haunting vocal delivery of P. Ramlee’s opening “Pukul lah tabuh, pukul lah tabuh, pukul rebana”. P. Ramlee’s “Gambus Jodoh” was one of the main primary tracks Kel Wen listened to when conceptualizing and creating the BEHATI PAHLAWAN collection for KLFW 2023.
