I decided to sequence the battle theme from Wizardry, since I always say how under appreciated this soundtrack is.

I've been struggling with how the three devices in my synth setup (Korg Volca Keys, Yamaha Reface DX, Roland Sound Canvas SC-88) all sound wildly different; which makes it hard to have a cohesive sound.  So I decided for this one to just have fun with the contrast of having an analog monosynth paired with FM Brass and sample based strings.

My god, and here I thought that Shining Force song was hard to sequence!

This is one of the most iconic songs from the arcades of all time, Passing Breeze from Outrun, bu the amazing Hiroshi Kawaguchi! 

My new drum machine finally came in this week, so I've been glued to it, trying to figure it all out.  I'm proud to announce that as of this cover, I'm now pure synth, no more ROMpler (unless I put it in for effect).  I can't believe how many different variations were used for each part, and then once you think it's over it transitions into a whole new section of the song.  I learned a ton by covering this track; I'm starting to feel like I can do almost anything on this sequencer now!

I can't believe Hiroshi Kawaguchi was able to sequence this whole song (as well as 3 other equally complex and long) on a System 16 Arcade board in 1986.  What an absolute legend!

Outrun

Outrun - Passing Breeze

My synth cover of the classic Final Fantasy IV Boss Battle Theme from Nobuo Uematsu!

This one came together pretty quickly, which is nice after last week's track.  I was a little worried that an SNES track would have too many different instruments for my sequencer to handle, but I was able to contain the whole thing to four tracks, which is great.  

I can't believe it's taken this long for me to do a Final Fantasy IV/II track.  This is one of my favorite overall boss battle themes from the entire Final Fantasy series, so I had to do this.  I was toying with the idea of turning it into a medley, and starting with the Calcabrina theme; I still might do that a little later, maybe next week, who knows.

The Final Trawl (Archie Fisher)

Dave Brunskill & I arranged this version of the traditional Matty Groves sourced from various versions of the song.  Dave plays guitar and harmonica and gives the song a dark, brooding, haunting feel.  I first hear Dave play his version at Saltburn and knew we had to get together and merge our two versions.  This is what we did :)

Matty Groves

The song is based on the stories of WWII pilots and their wives -- in particular my father's story and my parents' marriage, though some details are changed -- and the toll that war takes on soldiers and families. The verses are through-composed, and unlike most of my songs, there's no rhyme scheme.
