"Down in the Willow Garden", also known as "Rose Connelly" is a traditional Appalachian murder ballad about a man facing the gallows for the murder of his lover: he gave her poisoned wine, stabbed her, and threw her in a river. It originated in the 19th century, probably in Ireland, before becoming established in the United States. The lyrics greatly vary among earlier versions, but professional recordings have stabilized the song in a cut-down form. First professionally recorded in 1927, it was made popular by Charlie Monroe's 1947 version, and it has been recorded dozens of times since then.

This is the opening track off That Old Time Americana Vol 2. It's a cover of a tune by the band Ween that hails out of New Hope, Pennsylvania. They recorded it much slower, but I was searching for a more western sound. I recommend listening to their version which lists on their album entitled The Mollusk.

I always loved this song and feel it embodies a true definition of Americanah music. The Grateful Dead were a tremendous inspiration on me musically, lyrically, and emotionally. These lyrics always remind me that everyone is truly redeemable.

I've been a longtime admirer of Janine Levinson's work on Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/janinelevinson. I thought immediately thought that this song would be a fine fit for us to do together. I had only heard it randomly played on Spotify about three weeks ago, but really dug the bittersweet cynicism of the lyrics and the fine melody to boot. Janine's vocal work on this is incredible. She was such an awesome person to work with and get to know.

This is a song I wrote while being inspired by working with Janine https://soundcloud.com/janinelevinson . I was trying to write songs with her vocals in mind, but she always created such nuanced harmonies that often went well beyond my expectations. This is a song I wrote about being stuck at home, and that I shouldn't forget or take for granted its meaning and value. I love writing songs about defining "home", because the perception of it seems to always be in flux. My perception of home was quite different growing up than it is now. Lastly, a home is place everyone deserves. If you have the inclination, I would love to hear what are some of your favorite songs about the meaning of home if you comment of this song. Last Train Home (with Janine Levinson)

This is the third song Janine Levinson https://soundcloud.com/janinelevinson and I recorded in this week's sessions. I was pretty stoked on her vocal arrangement. This song is about small family farms that go into foreclosure because of climate change or are bullied out of existence by larger agricultural businesses. Remember,  buy local from farmer's markets if you have one in your area. The veggies taste better too.

This song is about people that hold extreme biases against the lifestyles of other groups of people. The lyrics delve into the isolation and hypocrisy that breeds these biases generationally. There are detrimental costs associated with this thinking.

I once went to see this band live with a friend of mine. I liked the band very much and was excited to watch them play. After they finished their first number, I applauded, whistled, hooted and hollered in appreciation. I was hushed by many members of the crowd.  I had never heard of such a thing. My friend became livid at being told what to do at a concert by the crowd, but we followed the rules of engagement, as it were. What a strange experience. Regardless, this song has always been close to my heart and having been stuck at home so long now,  I have grown accustomed to searching the night sky.
