Fibonacci’s Rabbits is based on what is known as the rabbit string, the original algorithm produced by the mathematician Fibonacci to solve a problem involving reproductive cycles in rabbits.  If 0 = a new rabbit and 1 = a mature rabbit, then the following string will result:

1 0 1 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1 (ad infinitum)

This string is based on several iterations of rabbit generations as follows:

It essentially produces the Fibonacci sequence:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc…
where each number is the sum of the previous two numbers in the sequence.

This sequence is represented in the music in various rhythmic forms, as well as intervallically.  The perfect fifth (and its inversion, the perfect fourth) plays an especially important role, as its ratio of 3/2 is itself a Fibonacci derivation (or, diatonically, 5/8).  While iterations of the rabbit string comprise the majority of the piece, literal representations are often trumped by musical decisions, as in the case of anomalous sections serving as transitions or development.

The resulting piece naturally requires minimalist sensibilities from the performers and allows for the use of some extended techniques, especially during the final iteration of the rabbit string.  As the iterations progress, the overall effect should sound like increasingly more literal rabbits at each iteration.  In other words, the underlying mathematical ratios are secondary to programmatic references to rabbits mating and reproducing.

Voo Doo

This is the first movement of a four movement chamber piece I composed back in graduate school for two saxophones (sop. and alto) and percussion.  The piece is entitled Strangers to our people.  The musicians are myself on soprano saxophone, Chris Hemingway on alto saxophone, and Tim Adams on Percussion (Log Drum, Udo drum, and vibraphone).  This was the last piece of my graduate recital at Michigan State University on May 1st, 2006.  Hope you enjoy!!
