Our friendship with Above & Beyond started in earnest when they heard our song "As The Rush Comes" - They loved it so much they wanted to do us a remix for it. We did the favor back to them with our remix of "No One on Earth." The #1 song of 2004 according to the listeners of Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance radio show!

The seeds of Zocalo were planted in early 2003 when Dave handed a demo of "As The Rush Comes" to Armin when he was playing at the Mayan in downtown LA. The next day Armin called Dave to tell him how much he loved the song and that he wanted to sign it to the label he was starting called Armada Music, thus becoming one Armada's first releases.

At that point, Armin wanted to get into the studio with us and create an original song together. In the fall of 2003 we went to Armin's house in Leiden, NL to create something. We spent a week in his studio and made a demo titled "16 Days Ago"  that we liked but didn't love. And thus, it never was finished.

Two years later, Armin got a copy of our song "Arcadia" and once again, this opened the conversation for us to collaborate. After the Winter Music Conference that year, we all headed to San Leandro, California to create something together in the studio and this is exactly what was made that first week of April, 2005.

While we were making the song, Armin and Dave decided to walk down the street to the local Zocalo Coffeehouse to get an afternoon pick-me-up. Armin loved their coffee so much that he decided that "Zocalo" should be the name of the song. We both agreed and the rest is dance music history.

Above & Beyond’s 2011 has been all about one thing – landmarks. In January, they celebrated 10 years of their ever-growing Anjunabeats label, before March’s 200th single release on the imprint; the genre defying anthem and Beatport #1 hit “Rebound” by Arty & Mat Zo. 

In April, Jono, Tony and Paavo then embarked on their biggest ever tour of the US with a road blocked 22-date stretch, including two sold out shows at LA’s legendary Hollywood Palladium, with the first selling out in just 90 minutes - a new record for the legendary venue.

In such a fast moving year, it seems fitting to close on a familiar totem pole in Above & Beyond’s annual calendar; their Anjunabeats Volume series. Capturing the sound of a label that has dominated Beatport charts and been supported this year by DJs as diverse as The Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta, Anjunabeats Volume 9 offers 2 CDs of predominantly unreleased, exclusive tracks from artists like Arty, Mat Zo, Andrew Bayer, Jaytech, Maor Levi and Above & Beyond themselves.

Modern, melodic and emotive, Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats sound remains unrestricted from one-dimensional genre restrictions. Dutchman Ferry Corsten reveals another pearl taken from his most recent and successful studio album WKND. His new single Not Coming Down, featuring the breath-taking vocals by the lovely Betsie Larkin from New York, has been hailed on online forums as an immaculate, annihilating ballad and that’s exactly what it is.

Betsie Larkin is no stranger when it comes to delivering powerful vocals for artists in the trance genre, as she already had the pleasure to collaborate with a.o. John O’Callaghan, Super8 & Tab, Sied van Riel, Lange, ATB and Bobina.

The mighty Dash Berlin was commissioned for a remix, gave the original version a tougher edge and complimented his remix with enormous peak time drops. Ferry even throws in an acoustic version of Not Coming Down, turning the epic uptempo original into an atmospheric "unplugged" musical pearl.
