Today's Interbay track was inspired by a comedy sketch that was never performed nor recorded.  Of all of the inspirations for Interbay music, this has to be one of the more unusual sources for the end result being the mutant pop track you're (hopefully) listening to right now.  

In 2006, I produced a comedy/variety show here in Seattle.  Called "ComedyNight", it ran for 31 weeks before our host venue announced their closure and an associated event took over our weekly slot.  The conceit for "ComedyNight" was that it was a popular tv comedy/variety show encountering cast issues/network interference.  So, the show itself was stand-up comedy sets, short films, music guests, sketches...but it also had a running storyline from week to week that played out before "the show" started, during commercial breaks and at the end.  

One of our regular cast members was very good at making funny short films, so I shared with him an idea I'd had...and he liked it and agreed to work on it.  However, that was just before we learned that the venue was to close and remodel after a sale--so, the sketch never got off the idea's page.  

The core idea of the sketch was:  A Luddite synthesizer band.  

In otherwords, what if Kraftwerk actually avoided technology--same aesthetics, same minimalist sparseness in the music, but all made with non-electronic sources.  The dynamic of loving the thing you hate seemed ripe for comedy.  Or the incongruity of people NOT playing the synthesizers they have in front of them, and calling it music.

And I had a title for the sketch (and probably the name of the band.)  A play on the title of the infamous 1929 short film by Luis Buñuel, co-written by Salvador Dali, "Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog"--my sketch would be called "Machine Andalou" (or Machien Andalou)--meaning "An Andalusian Machine", but sounding like "My Andalusian Dog.")  

I was always tickled by the supposed cleverness of that pun...so, when I was working on a simple analog synth pop tune and needed a temporary project file name to save it, I used "Machine Andalou"...even though the track itself isn't exactly the type of music that Machien Andalou would have made.  

When it came time to add in the necessary vocal element that every Interbay track posted on SoundCloud must have--I decided to honor the inspiration for the pun.  What you'll hear, in case you don't speak French, is an altered description of what happens in "Un Chien Andalou", mixed in with some Interbay lore.  

It's a vibe and it amuses me.  Hopefully, you'll be charmed too!
