After his fabulous Horizons LP release last year, Popnoname asked a handful of good artist friends to do a few remixes for him. A whole year of pandemic has passed, and now the long-awaited, newly interpretations by artists such as @adaofficial, Astrobal (@lesfraisessauvages), @axelboman , @bryankessler and MYR (@nobodyknowsmyr) have finally come out into the light, to spread some hope and positive vibrations for a brighter future.

Aimed at providing a different insight into dance music the label Special place provides both acoustic and electronic sounds that are not sonically linked to a specific era, but all carry a shamanic or esoteric hinge. This EP is just that with the three amazing artists Mushrooms Project, Longhair and Eric Duncan all bringing their own take to this leftfield slomo disco to house vibe. It’s an honor to have them on board!

You gotta love Eric Duncan. Such a laidback, fun and easy going chap! After having turned NY upside down he currently resides in Bali when he's not touring amidst the pandemic. He actually remixed this track whilst in Brazil (how does he do that?). He probably has the vastest collection of selfies with DJ Harvey if this means anything. Berlin based Longhair has a string of releases on labels such as Bordello A Parrigi, Permanent Vacation or Love On the Rocks. He actually does sport long hair and probably has a third ear for turning music into untameable beat dance fury. And what about our hosts Mushrooms Project? Well they paved a solid catalogue with their characteristic shamanic house music releases, go check out for yourself!

Futureboogie Recordings is calling time after ten years with a 20-track compilation that sums up the sound of the lovingly curated Bristol label. From throbbing arps and noirish guitar twangs to errant analogue blips and ceaseless, rolling grooves, it’s a different sound to what you might have heard five years back on the Summer Riot IV compilation, and certainly a long way from the early days. Consider Futureboogie 10² an ode to evolution as much as a toast to all the great tracks and the family of artists that have passed through the wide-reaching Futureboogie sphere since before the label was even a sparkle in the disco ball.
 
Originally founded by Dave Harvey and Steve Nickolls, the roots of Futureboogie lie in an intimate Bristol party called Seen. Started in 2002, this open-hearted session invited the likes of Metro Area, Attica Blues, Carl Craig, Maurice Fulton, Moodymann and Gilles Peterson – based on that heavyweight list, you can see the foundations were laid for what was to come. Futureboogie evolved off the back of these parties as a many-limbed operation – an artist management and booking agency as much as a club night, with Harvey and Nickolls consolidating the sound as DJs around Bristol and beyond. The progression to a record label was a logical one.
 
When Futureboogie Recordings launched in 2011 with Julio Bashmore and Javeon McCarthy’s ‘Father Father’, it represented an extended circle of friends close to the label from Bristol’s deep pool of talent and beyond – amongst them Eats Everything, Waifs & Strays, PBR Streetgang, Behling & Simpson and Crazy P. The reach of the label grew in tandem with its reputation, not to mention the endeavours of the team in other areas of the music game. The Boogiefuturo label became a vital entity on its own terms, carrying a lauded DJ Nature remix of Typesun which encapsulates two distinct generations of Bristolian house music at its best. DJ Nature, who cut his teeth as DJ Milo in the Wild Bunch days, has gone on to become a regular feature on Futureboogie, helping define its soulful, adventurous spirit.

File Under Balearic Gabba EP is the first in a new series of serious DJ tools that will encompass remixes, edits, originals and licenses, all with artwork that is a twist on the original Balearic Gabba logo by PlanetLuke.
Up first is a new selection of music from core Hell Yeah artists that is unruly, impossible to define, and sure to twist dance floors inside out.

First up is Daniel Klein better known as SIRS, a Berlin-based mainstay with releases on the likes of Live At Robert Johnson.  His cut of  Caramel 3000's 'Super Rapido' is a dubbed-out blend of kosmiche chug and tropical percussion. Tumbling synth sequences bring extra colour as the groove builds over nine irresistible minutes. 

Then comes Japanese downtempo master Calm with his Mellow Mellow Acid Dub of Sergio Messina & The Four Twenties's 'Sometimes Remember' which is a nostalgic acid daydream and the perfect sunset soundtrack. Melancholic moods and lazy drums sink you in deep as the gentle acoustic guitars keep you afloat.  

Label regular and Internasjonal and International Feel associate Feel Fly then comes through with an Estatico Danzante Remix of Pedro Bertho's 'Tornei' feat Mariana Gehring and takes us to the stars on twinkling keys, dusty breakbeats and steamy, worldly vocals that glow as warm as a setting sun. 

Last of all is New York maestro and Loose Control Band member DJ Spun with his It's Rong Remix of My Friend Dario's 'Acid Mosquito in a Summer Night'. It finds him serving up a nine-minute excursion into jungle humidity with tribal percussion and jumbled bongos all run through with a spooky and primeval lead synth over lurching drum breaks.

The File Under Balearic Gabba EP brings a whole new dimension to wonky dance floor workouts.
