Sometimes fate just smiles upon you and you chance upon an artist at the peak of their powers and with Sebastien Tellier providing this week’s podcast we think we’re very much in the right place at the right time.

Following the exciting announcements of details of a show at London’s Village Underground this Autumn and a new single entitled Love, taken from his most recent album L’Aventura we think we’re further showcasing the immense talents of the irrepressible French singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist at the perfect time as he delivers some of the most exciting material of his career. For the uninitiated L’Aventura is Tellier’s fifth album official and debut LP for Record Makers – and first for Because Music in the UK.  It follows L’Incoyable Verite (2001), Politics (2004), Sexuality (2008) and My God Is Blue (2012).
It is a concept set in a part-mythical Brazil, cinematic and adventurous, musically it adds exquisite Brazilian tones to Tellier’s usual idiosyncratic palate of Gallic pop & chanson, baroque and electronic.

A unique and hugely talented artist, Tellier’s gifts lay in the unquantifiable. The son of a musician whose first inspiration came from Pink Floyds Atom Heart Mother, he released his first album in 2001 and his break-through single La Ritournelle in 2004 and in subsequent years has carved out a diverse and esoteric path, from working with Daft Punk, Air and Sofia Copolla, to appearing on stage on a golf-cart representing France in 2008’s Eurovision Song Contest. This is a man who refuses to walk anyone else’s path when he can blaze his own trail. Enjoy.

Mondays are bleak by definition but and November Mondays especially so. It’s cold, dreary and not quite Christmas. In short everything about today should suck but, wait what’s this light on an otherwise gloomy day? It’s only the bloody DT podcast and this week we’ve got an extra special mix to warm the hearts of even the most downhearted with a hour of cuts from one of the unsung hero of New York’s 90s disco explosion Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy.

Tutored by two of the scenes most respected names in David Mancuso and François K, Colleen has literally done it all. Run a record label. Check. Tour the globe as a DJ. Check. Host her own radio show. Create an event brand. Check. Compile a DT podcast… check. And that’s not even the half of it. We’ve not even mentioned an illustrious studio career that saw her team up with the likes of like X-Press 2’s Ashley Beedle (as Darkstarr Diskotek), former Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas (as Wild Rumpus) and remix some of the most adventurous women in music, including Bat For Lashes, Sinead O’Connor and Planningtorock.

Unless you've been hiding under your Grandmother’s electric blanket for the past few weeks, you may have noticed things are getting rather grey and chilly outside. Yes, as those gloomy folk on Game Of Thrones predicted winter has arrived and here at Data Transmission we've been on the hunt for the perfect mix to warm us up and drive away the blues. Helping us through those meteorologically dreary times has been a series of vocal laden efforts that already have us dreaming of laying on a beach somewhere warm where the waters are crystal clear and the only thing cold is the ice in our drinks.

Soundtracking such daydreams of warmer climes has been the sounds of Gothenburg's Little Dragon who quite frankly blew the office away with the unveiling of the video to their new single ‘Underbart’ earlier in the month. For a long time almost an industry codeword for having good musical taste recent years have seen the Gothenburg outfit achieve international acclaim with the likes of Pharrell Williams and OutKast joining DT as fans. So with a big set of dates coming up including a hotly anticipated performance at London’s Brixton Academy on November 27th and a slot at Thailand’s awesome looking Wonderfruit Festival (where we could make a daydreams of winter sunshine a reality) we thought now was the perfect time to invite Little Dragon to deliver the most extra special of podcasts and they’ve done just that. We’re big fans of Vince Watson here at Data Transmission so when the inimitable Scotsman agreed to helm the latest edition of the DT podcast it’s fair to say we were more than a little excited. What would he play? Whilst probably best known for his techno output the Glaswegian veteran is just at home playing house, jazz or ambient numbers so just what avenue he’d lead us down was anybody’s guess. Whilst we won’t spoil the surprise (it’s up to you whether or not you want to have a gander at the tracklist) we will tell you it has certainly lived up to our lofty expectations.

UMOJA - 4H DJ SET @ LENTEFEEST

New wave rumba disco crossover, recorded in Paris in the mid 80s. 

4 tracks spanning rumba, disco, new wave and reggae experiments from Congolese singer Albert Siassia and his group Tokobina, including two previously unreleased tracks taken from original demo tapes. 

Originally from Pointe Noire in Congo, Albert Siassia came to Paris in the early 80s as part of the Ballet Nationale du Congo and joined forces with a young French reggae group called Dread Lion – a band he re-christened “Tokobina” (Lingala for “let’s dance”). Keen to broaden their audience the group played a mixture of reggae, rumba, disco and new wave styles, often using drum machines and synths. 
They released one 12” EP, further altering the spelling of the name – “Tokobina” was phonetically anglicised to “Talk-Hoby-Night” in an unsuccessful effort to increase international sales. The record failed to make much of an impact and soon after Albert Siassia moved back to Pointe Noire to become an evangelical preacher. He passed away in 1999. 
Dancefloor sureshots Mama Africa and Pointe Noire are taken from the group’s only 12” release. In the world and Sangui are taken from demo cassettes from the archive of drummer Franck Benhamou. Sangui was originally scheduled for release on a 7” but the release was withdrawn due to a pressing fault.

SIASSIA & TOKOBINA - SANGI (B2) *previously unreleased*

[PIAS] Nites 2012 happened last month and to celebrate the Entertainment Company being 30 years old, 2manydjs performed their Under the Covers show with a little mix of artists and songs that have been licensed by them.

Because I absolutely love the mix and you folks know how I enjoy remaking 2manydjs' edits, I've decided to give a go at recreating it. Problem is, the footage available of this mix is very limited, audio quality is a bit poor so it's a bit a difficult to figure out songs and from the way the mix was presented, this could end up being one of the new hours for Radio Soulwax. So recreating it in full will be difficult/probably impossible. But with the footage I got, I can still try to remake certain parts of it and make something for you guys to enjoy so here's the first of a few remade parts of the [PIAS] mix.

2manydjs' [PIAS]:30 YEARS MIX Remake (Clip 1)

Lost Map Records are delighted to announce new material by London and Manchester based spoken word artist, writer and saxophonist Angus Fairbairn AKA Alabaster dePlume. A PostMap postcard single features a remix of ‘What Do We Want’ by Teleman drummer Hiro Ama, plus a version of ‘Who Are You Asking For’ recorded live at the Total Refreshment Centre in London as part of Alabaster’s monthly development residency PEACH. Both tracks will be included on a bonus disc set to be packaged with a deluxe repressing of the wonderfully uncategorisable album The Corner of a Sphere, which is set for release February 1, 2019, after the original pressing quickly sold-out on vinyl following its release in May. Alabaster dePlume is touring widely in coming months, including a newly announced headline show at Hangar in London on Saturday, February 2 – his biggest headline show to date. 

As Alabaster explains, ‘What Do We Want’ is a song about “our refusal to include people from disadvantaged backgrounds in our society, while celebrating competitive accumulation of wealth… which implies that there is something we all want, that’s better than our general wellbeing, better than one-another. What is it?” The track’s theme about society-at-large’s fear of immigration, and refugees, is reflected in the artwork, a retelling of the poem as a sinister, bureaucratic government form.
