TORRO TORRO - WINTER MIX '14 - EDM.COM Exclusive

Sonny Wharton has emerged in the past couple of years as one of the brightest prospects in the UK. Described by The Shapeshifters as “one of the most prolific producers out there” he’s remixed the likes of Fatboy Slim, Frankie Knuckles and The Temper Trap. Releasing singles on Size, Toolroom, Spinnin’ and Skint Sonny has received regular support from house music heavyweights Pete Tong, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez and Mark Knight whilst continuing to push his own label Whartone Records and dominate the download charts.﻿

As a DJ Sonny shot to fame by winning a DJ Mag mix-tape competition for Renaissance leading to sets in Ibiza at Amnesia, a weekly residency at the infamous Manumission and quickly went on to establish a formidable reputation as a DJ whilst racking up slots for the who’s who of club land with sell-out shows at Space, Pacha and Ministry Of Sound to name but a few.

Known for his technical abilities both in the studio and in the DJ booth Sonny has been able to call us at DT fans of his for a while now. Thus after enjoying a stellar 2013 that saw him continue his indomitable rise through electronic music and with an even bigger plans for the coming year for both him and his label it was only natural that invited Sonny to revisit 5 pivotal moments in his fledgling career. The fact that he also delivered us an exclusive mix to go with it was just a bonus!


Mix of the Day : Sonny Wharton

Twenty years ago, electronic dance music in America was a much different beast than the Las Vegas-friendly industry it is today, divided into underground factions such as house and techno-rave [as they called it]. It was mainly the house and techno coming out of New York, Chicago and Detroit which enthralled and obsessed UK clubbers and record spotters, then in the throes of that amazing period which saw clubs up and down the country regularly packed and cavorting. Every week seemed to bring gargantuan new tunes which pushed out the boundaries and detonated crowds, throwing up new musical mutants as different styles collided and the clubbing communities, anywhere from Glasgow’s Slam and Leeds’ Back To Basics to Full Circle near Slough and Open All Hours at the Ministry, revelled in the ongoing fun and uproar. 

One of our favourite labels to appear in the early 90’s  San Francisco label Hardkiss, which were totally unlike the banging techno and trouser-napalming proto-trance mayhem sprouting at the time. Hardkiss was run by three brothers called Scott, Gavin and Robbie, who weren’t brothers by blood but shared a  spiritual and musical bond releasing a mixture of acid house music, trance music, and breakbeat techno together on their eponymous label.

Sadly the trio was reduced to a duo following the tragic passing away of Scott last March with Gavin and Robbie continuing on without their sorely missed brother. Now to kick off their 2014 we’re pleased to share with you an exclusive mix from Gavin and Robbie in celebration of the release of their new EP RetroactiveFuturisticPsychedelicFunkBump on Whiskey Pickle as the second single from their forthcoming album 1991 which is due to land later this year. Billed as a “ slick slab of electro-boogie rhythms,” the single features vocoded vox and a driving bass line that'll take listeners on an interstellar voyage from Cybotron to Planet Rock.

Exclusive Mix: Gavin & Robbie Hardkiss

In recent years there have been few places the DT team would rather be than in Amsterdam’s Trouw.  Initially intended as a temporary nightspot, the former newspaper factory quickly found a special place in our hearts as it offered one of the finest clubbing experiences in the world launching some of the Netherland’s most promising rising stars and it was with great sadness that we received the news that the club would be entering its final 12 months as of this January. 

One such talent to come out of the Amsterdam institution is resident and Life and Death label manager, Job Jobse who has quickly forged a reputation as one of the one to watch, winning plaudits from some of the scenes biggest names with Tale Of Us and the Innervisions camp already amongst his growing army of fans. Regularly showcasing his diverse musical knowledge, we can certainly see why he’s resident at one of the world's most respected clubs, as well as managing label of the moment, Life and Death, at such an early age.

So with these achievements in mind and  him being about to touch down in London on Saturday March 8th to play for new night We Concur at Crucifix Lane alongside Mano Le Tough, Clockwork and Mind Against, we thought that we’d secure the services of Job to with this exclusive mix for your listening pleasures. We've got yet another exclusive treat for you dedicated DT readers today as Bristolian collective Dr Meaker step up to deliver the latest edition of our esteemed Mix Of The Day series.

Accessible without betraying their influences, the outfits blend of pop straddling drum and bass has us predicting big things, and we're not the only ones tipping them for the big time with their last single ‘Right Back’ getting a lot of love on the airwaves and their new track ‘Freaks’ featuring Cappo D and Sharlene Hector already picking up plenty of support from the likes of Radio 1’s Mistajam.

Much like their productions, Dr Meaker mix flirts with a wide array of the various styles and sounds that constitute the broad D&B landscape, placing tracks from Hamilton and Rene Lavice alongside efforts from the likes of Hazard, Preditah and themselves. Earlier this month, the drum & bass legend that is DJ Marky announced details of his debut solo album, My Heroes. Comprised of 17 tracks, the album, which is set to be released on his Innerground label on 15th June, will feature an array of his notorious d&b funk, Brazilian flair and his trademark interlaced groovy percussion. 

It's a bit of an understatement to say that a full length transmission from Marky has been a long time coming - especially when you consider the fact that he’s been transcending the world’s dancefloors for over 25 years now. So it seemed only right that the selector and those affiliated with him would mark this wondrous occasion with an eagerly awaited launch party right here in Room One on Friday 12th June. In the run up to release he's not only been kind enough to give his faithful fans an insight into the making of the album by releasing an exclusive documentary, drip feeding teaser episodes each week but he's also given us the opportunity to enjoy another brand new and exclusive mix that he's put together "with love" to help stoke the coals of anticipation...

After winning the ‘Best Newcomer Producer’ at last year’s Drum & Bass Awards, all eyes have been [rightly] fixed on Frankee and his output. His All Four One EP for the juggernaut that is Ram Records placated a lot of people with it’s four tracks of his stylized, tough nut production, but since February he’s been a little quiet – a reason we’re so amped up to be able to present the world with this fresh mixtape. Made in anticipation of Frankee’s imminent return to Farringdon on 17th June, he was pretty openly keen for us to publish it as soon as possible so you guys could hear the dubplates and exclusive bits it contains first. Like cricket, football and rugby, drum and bass originated in good ol' Blighty and much like the aforementioned sports, it's gone global. Inevitably this means the UK's time as a drum and bass superpower may well be limited as the talent pool deepens and the genre continues to expand its reach.

Bulgarian producer L33 is a case in point with his intricate production skills having helped place Bulgaria's burgeoning D&B scene on the map. His impressive back catalogue has seen him release tunes for the likes Program, Eatbrain, Rise Audio, Titan, Addictive Behaviour and Lifted Music and pick up support from the likes of heavyweight artists Andy C, DJ Hype, Dillinja and Noisia. All this he's still yet to blow the candles out on his 22nd birthday. We'd be jealous if we weren't enjoying his music so much.

So with his career continuing to sky rocket, DJ sets at underground parties across Europe, main stage action at Let It Roll  and a headline set alongside Commix, Doc Scott and Halogenix at London nightspot The Qube Project for Addictive Behaviour December 4th, we thought there was no time like the present to welcome him to our Mix Of The Day series. And guess what? We were right...
