Unorthodox is a name making serious waves in the House scene at the moment. Garnering attention from the likes of Todd Terry, Secondcity and Toolroom Records (to name but a few) is no easy feat. Collecting records for over 20 years, his love of music has had a naturally had positive impact on Unorthodox’s sound, with obvious nods to Acid culture shown in his production.

Having worked with some of the industry's big hitters, Unorthodox has now devoted his time to the machines and has provided us with some head-turning output in the meantime. His infectious drums and dirty basslines have marked him out as one to keep an eye on in the House and Techno scene.

Dropping his latest track on Suara’s hotly anticipated ‘Kitties Wanna Dance Vol.5′ compilation,  the cut is the first of many projects he'll be embarking upon this year having spent time in the studio working on new music with Secondcity and Solarris and a host of solo EPs. Mix Of The Day: Unorthodox

Following the international success of the debut single "Aguacerito Llové" which received radio support from DJs such as Gilles Peterson (Worldwide FM) and Jamz Supernova (BBC6) amongst others, the 3rd single of Canto Diáspora is out now: "Pajarillo Verde / Seis Figureao". The mini medley combines two important works of Latin American folklore, reinterpreted by the first Latin American female vocal ensemble from Berlin, Canto Diáspora, whose voices create a lively connection between tradition and the present.

"Pajarillo Verde" is one of the best-known songs in the Venezuelan folk repertoire. Its name evokes the bird – light, iridescent, fragile – and at the same time the rhythm of the joropo, which traces the gallop of horses across the vast plains of the Llanos. Between Venezuela and Colombia, where harp, cuatro and maracas characterise the soundscape, the song tells of the fragility of life and the delicate connections between humans and nature – a poetic motif that echoes in many Latin American songs. In Canto Diáspora's interpretation, the piece takes on a new resonance: tradition is upheld, yet brought into the present, entering into dialogue with the "Seis Figureao", a Venezuelan rhythm rarely heard outside its homeland.

Verses written especially by Canto Diáspora are recited by the voices of the women in the ensemble, who have created their own community in Berlin through singing. In this soundscape, past and present, origin and lived experience interweave to form a living space in which tradition lives on and, at the same time, something new emerges. Music becomes a bridge here – between the plains of the Llanos and the streets of Berlin, between memory and the present, between the intimacy of individual lives and the power of community. Every note, every rhythm tells of movement, encounter and the delicate balance between preservation and renewal.

Jonna has been playing music with soul for the past 20 years, from the City Fly basement parties @ Sophbeck (RIP) in his hometown of Leicester, to the festival circuit in Croatia to the dark underground clubs of Berlin and as far as Tokyo. He has also supported the likes of Roy Ayres (RIP), Children of Zeus, Benji B, Underground Resistance & MCDE to name a few! 

Jonna has released notable music on Lumberjacks in Hell, BBE, Shadeleaf Music, Flat White Records and his own imprint City Fly Records which has gained support from the likes of BBC 6 Music, Mr Scruff, Jimpster and Derrick Carter. His last release 'Jus Move' featuring Javonntte with Marcellus Pittman & SoulPhiction (RIP) Remixes was featured in Juno Records Top 10 'Best Deep House Records’ of the year and was ‘Release Of The Day’ on Resident Advisor.

Recently, Jonna has been concentrating on his music promo service ‘Unveil PR’ and starting a family but is still an avid record collector and selector spanning many genres of the musical spectrum.

NDATL 042 REGGIE DOKES’ "THE ALKEBULAN EP" 
NDATL Records continue with the return of Detroit legend Reggie Dokes with his new 12", The Alkebulan EP—a deep, spiritual, and sonically adventurous record that finds Dokes fully in his element while pushing into new emotional territory.
Side A opens with “Unknown Valley,” where shimmering chords and a haunting vocoded voice glide across a hypnotic groove, setting the tone for an EP rich in warmth and mystery. Dokes follows with “Still Exist,” an excursion into his darker instincts—moody, driving, and steeped in the grit that has defined his most revered work.
Flipping the record reveals Dokes in a more expansive, jazz-inflected mindset. “Soul Searchin” stretches into expressive harmonic territory, showcasing his ear for introspective, cinematic sonics. The journey culminates with title track “Alkebulan,” both featuring longtime collaborator Skip Pruitt, whose saxophone floats and weaves through Dokes’ musical landscapes, forming a Psychostasia blend of jazz, deep house, and spiritual energy the dancer simply cannot resist.
The Alkebulan EP is both a celebration of lineage and a forward-moving statement—classic NDATL quality with Reggie Dokes’ unmistakable fingerprint.
Available late December / early January on vinyl.
