Hardy's - Culture Vulture feat. Felmann [Hustletrax]

Smokey Robinson's "Being With You" is one of our all-time favourite smoochers. His voice on that recording is pure gold, and the overly-earnest sax locks it in as one of the sweetest guilty pleasures the 80s had to offer. That said, do we want to hear it in a house record? We were not sure! But Kevin McKay has done wonders with this. Sampling just the verses and adding an original sped-up chorus has kept the song in a minor key. His stripped-back bassline and beats make the perfect accompaniment for Jamal Roach's incredible topline, creating the kind of groove that rivals his version of "Tom's Diner" for simple yet effective house music.

Digging for vinyl was fun, but digital digging has taken things to a new level. In the 90s, we would struggle to spend more than a few hours in a record store. Those hours now pass in the blink of an eye when you’re in a DSP rabbit hole! It was one of those never-ending stories that led us to Bridvog. In a past life, he recorded as Ambear, and we found his life-affirming synth anthem “Make Me Move” at the end of an ARTBAT playlist. From there, we discovered the Kraftwerk-inspired indie-dance of “R Life” on DiYnamic. Conveniently, he popped up in our inbox with an idea; needless to say, we were all over it. Recently, Kevin has been revisiting ideas from his Mylo and Linus Loves era, which chimed perfectly with Bridvog. Fast-forward a few weeks, and the pair deliver “Salty”, taking Alessia Labate’s ultra-hooky vocal on a turbocharged indie-tech ride through 106 bass and Nord stabs (IYKYK).

Folkness - Caramba [Wh0 Plays]

Dusty Springfield’s version of this is a stone-cold classic. Over the years it’s been a sampler's favourite with both Sonny Fodera and Maribou State two big names who have crafted a version. Travis Emmons has provided some of our favourite deep house re-rubs over the years (his “Grapevine” rework is an anthem in East London), so when he popped up with this one we were all over it like a powerful moss. When it came to singers, there was only one option too. Darcey has delivered some dynamite for us and her soft jazzy tones are absolutely perfect here.
