Completing our trilogy of classic Shinobi scores from the Mega Drive/Genesis era, we are pleased to announce this vinyl edition of Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi.

Originally released in 1990, Shadow Dancer combined elements of its arcade predecessor and the methodical hack and slash gameplay of The Revenge of Shinobi to create a different and grittier take on the Shinobi series, set in a New York City devastated and overrun by a demonic lizard worshipping cult. The score, composed by Keisuke Tsukahara, largely replaces the Japanese influences of The Revenge of Shinobi with an occasionally darker, more chaotic tone to compliment the dystopian western setting, alongside a few funkier, bass-focused tracks for which the series has become known.

Shadow Dancer is presented as a 180g vinyl edition, with audio sourced from a Japanese Mega Drive console, remastered in-house and cut at 45RPM. It is packaged in a heavyweight matt laminated sleeve and accompanied by a double-sided lithographic print of archival artwork and an obi strip. It is available in the following editions:

Released in partnership with SEGA, we are proud to announce the debut vinyl edition of Sonic Spinball. Originally released in 1993 for the Mega Drive console, Sonic Spinball was an ambitious hybrid of pinball and platforming and a significant departure from previous Sonic the Hedgehog games. This change of game style, along with the industrial-themed level designs, also inspired a very different kind of Sonic soundtrack. Composed by Howard Drossin, Brian Coburn and Barry Blum from the SEGA Technical Institute in the USA (where the game was also developed), the music of Sonic Spinball is suitably darker, industrial and wholly unique for a Sonic game of the era.

Sonic Spinball is presented as a 180g vinyl edition, remastered in-house and cut at 45RPM. The audio was sourced from a Japanese Mega Drive console, alongside archival files supplied by Sonic Team. It is packaged in a heavyweight matt laminated sleeve and accompanied by a lithographic print of the classic cover art and an obi strip. It is available in the following editions:

Released in partnership with SEGA of Japan and composer Tomoya Ohtani, Data Discs is excited to announce a special vinyl edition of the Sonic Frontiers soundtrack. 

The Music of Starfall Islands is a collection of beautiful instrumental and classical-inspired tracks which are used as the background music for the various islands in Sonic Frontiers. The music for each island is presented as a suite, containing several movements that layer upon one another and build up to a climax, each with its own distinctive tone and feel, much like the islands themselves, which range from green meadows, to arid deserts, volcanoes and beyond. The music, composed solely by Tomoya Ohtani, is often stripped down, melancholic, and unexpectedly experimental, featuring an array of unusual sound sources (including Iranian percussion, Celtic vocal samples and Armenian folk instruments). In other moments, it is often rhythmic and emotive, with the addition of subtle electronics and the grandiose strings of The Nashville Scoring Orchestra.

While this release is by no means the complete soundtrack to Sonic Frontiers, we are thrilled to be able to present these beautiful and intriguing tracks as a collection on their own. With its downbeat tone and new compositional approaches, this music is unlike any Sonic soundtrack that has come before and may well subvert the expectations of some long-term fans, but should also surprise and delight audiences both new and old.

As Tomoya Ohtani explains in his liner notes for this release: “I wanted to create an atmosphere for each song that, despite the sadness it carries, also has a glimmer of hope. I do not believe there are many other pieces of Sonic game music that focus so much on the atmosphere as the tracks on Sonic Frontiers do.”

A concept album of experimental interpretations and original compositions inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A collaboration between the video game soundtrack label, Data Discs, and the London-based experimental group, Imprints.

Written and recorded between 2019-2023, this album utilises tape machines, pedal steel guitar, modular synthesisers, field recordings, piano, double bass and various DIY circuits/devices in an attempt to approach the idea of the “video game cover album” in a more organic and interpretative way. By mixing acoustic and ensemble elements with processed electronic and synthesised sounds, the intention is to reflect the feelings of desolation, space and loss often evoked by this most revered and influential game.

Motohiro Kawashima is a Tokyo-based game composer and DJ, best known for his work on the legendary Streets of Rage 2 & 3, which he co-composed alongside his friend and longtime collaborator, Yuzo Koshiro. His work is known for its experimental and techno-influenced style, most notably on the genre-defying and entirely unclassifiable soundtrack to Streets of Rage 3, which continues to astonish and perplex listeners over 30 years later.

In 2017, Kawashima was reunited with Koshiro to tour the music of the Streets of Rage trilogy in live venues across the World and shortly afterwards began working on his first solo album.

This vinyl edition showcases Kawashima’s first ever non-soundtrack albums, combining the previously self-released Prepared Wave (2019) and Acrobatizm (2023) into one package. Throughout these works, Kawashima explores and blends different styles of electronic music, drawn from his decades of watching Western trends enthusiastically from afar, while retaining his own unique style and the sense of playful experimentalism for which he first became known.

Widely recognised as one of the greatest and most influential game soundtracks of all time, STREETS OF RAGE 2 remains a towering achievement of the 16bit era. Data Discs is extremely proud to be releasing this masterpiece of FM synthesis, composed by Yuzo Koshiro in 1992 and sounding more relevant today than ever.

The audio has been carefully remastered using multiple sources, including the original NEC PC-88 files supplied by Koshiro himself, and packaged in original artwork sourced from the SEGA archives in Japan.

"To celebrate the 30th anniversary of OutRun, we are delighted to present a very special vinyl edition of its timeless music. Originally released in 1986, OutRun remains one of the most recognisable arcade games ever made. At its time of release, the music, by renowned SEGA Sound Team member Hiroshi “Hiro” Kawaguchi, was a triumph of imagination and creativity. It showcased a fusion of styles and influences, all ingeniously and inexplicably condensed into the confines of an eighties arcade board. The music was so integral to the game itself, that it is now difficult to imagine OutRun – or, indeed, the history of arcade music – without the enduring charm of Hiro’s soundtrack.

The vinyl release includes the entirety of Hiro’s original OutRun, sourced directly from the 1986 arcade machine, alongside three bonus tracks drawn from the 1991 Mega Drive and 2014 Nintendo 3DS versions of the game, all of which have been carefully remastered. It is packaged in a heavyweight 425gsm matt varnished sleeve, with custom die-cut window, three interchangeable covers, traditional OBI strip and liner notes written by Hiro himself."

Data Discs is proud to present the first ever vinyl edition of Yoshitaka Azuma’s score to SEGA’s classic rail-shooter, Panzer Dragoon. First released in 1995 to coincide with the North American launch of the Saturn console, Panzer Dragoon has since become a cult favourite, not only for its stark art direction, inspired by renowned French artist Jean “Mobieus” Giraud, but also for its sweeping soundtrack. Composed by the late Yoshitaka Azuma, whose previous solo albums for Nippon Columbia had drawn on everything from ambient, prog, krautrock and electronic minimalism, the music of Panzer Dragoon moves between swelling orchestral pieces, blasts of rhythmic synthesis and ambient passages that wouldn’t seem out of place in the Tangerine Dream discography. When viewed as a standalone concept album, Panzer Dragoon succeeds in somehow conveying, by the sum of its seemingly dissonant parts, that most basic of human fantasies; the sensation of being in flight. In the 90s.

Panzer Dragoon is presented as a double 180g LP, cut at 45rpm and housed in a single pocket, 425gsm mirror board sleeve with accompanying lithographic insert and silver laminated OBI strip. Collaborating once again with legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro, Data Discs is thrilled to present one of the most revered and timeless soundtracks of the 16bit era: The Revenge of Shinobi. Composed in 1989, the music for the Mega Drive game (known as The Super Shinobi in Japan) blended Western dance music with Japanese overtones, to create something truly unlike anything else before. The soundtrack was Koshiro’s first commissioned work for SEGA and served as a forerunner to his seminal Streets of Rage trilogy, where the concepts and styles he founded with Shinobi would be expanded upon to astonishing effect. Koshiro’s work on The Revenge of Shinobi remains a testament to the ingenuity of early game composers who, when given enough creative freedom, found the means of drawing new and unexpected sounds from extremely limited hardware.

The Revenge of Shinobi is presented as a 180g LP, cut at 45rpm and packaged in a 425gsm outer sleeve, with heavyweight inner sleeve and double-sided lithographic print, featuring original artwork sourced from the SEGA archives in Japan. Originally released in the arcades in 1988, but quickly ported over to SEGA’s new Mega Drive console, where it entered countless homes as a pack-in game, Altered Beast remains memorable for many things over its gameplay, not least its soundtrack. Composed by Tohru “Master” Nakabayashi, the music of Altered Beast moves between intense battle themes and cavernous dirges; the perfect backdrop to traversing the netherworld, punching pigs and powering up. 

Sourced from original hardware and carefully mastered for vinyl, Altered Beast is presented as a 45RPM cut LP in a 400g matt varnished sleeve and printed inner sleeve, both of which feature hand-painted artwork from the SEGA archives. Also included is a foldout poster of the original painting used for the game’s box art.

One of the most unique, ambitious and experimental game soundtracks ever made. Now on vinyl for the very first time.

Similar to the task of condensing Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima’s abundance of ideas into a Mega Drive cartridge in 1994, it feels impossible to convey the influences, technical achievements and sheer ambition of their masterpiece into a single paragraph today. By combining automatic composition methods, custom programming languages and a complete sense of artistic freedom, Koshiro and Kawashima transcended their medium and created something so incomparable that it’s hard to believe it came from any games console, let alone a 16bit one. Streets of Rage 3 is urgent, demanding and a complete rejection of the notion that video game music is either pedestrian or predictable. We are honoured to be releasing it.

Streets of Rage 3 is presented as a double 180g LP in a heavyweight single pocket sleeve, with accompanying lithographic print featuring artwork from the SEGA archives in Japan. Space Harrier is perhaps most memorable for its lengthy and melodic opening theme, in which SEGA’s renowned in-house composer, Hiroshi “Hiro” Kawaguchi (OutRun, After Burner), armed with a Yamaha DX-7 and the most minimal of resources, sought to recreate the sound of a full band. In doing so, he defied the technological constraints of the time and inspired a generation of game composers, including Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage), who has since cited Space Harrier as a defining early influence. Looking beyond its iconic main theme however, Space Harrier also shows Hiro playing with a range of sounds and styles, from infectious loops and jaunty battle themes, to the doomy and surprisingly bass-heavy WIWI JUMBO.

Space Harrier is presented as a remastered 180g LP, pressed at 45RPM and featuring the complete 1985 arcade score, along with a bonus arranged version of the main theme by SEGA’s in-house live band (S.S.T. Band). Also included are new and exclusive liner notes written by Hiro himself and a lithographic print of the original artwork from the Japanese archives.

In addition, we are thrilled to reveal that the limited edition will feature a bespoke 3D lenticular cover, carefully re-modeled from the original illustration and befitting the iconic visual style of the game.

Originally released in 2006 and composed by Masami Ueda, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Rei Kondoh and Akari Groves, the music of OKAMI perfectly embodies the creative beauty of the game and its recurring themes of restoration and resolve. Using traditional Japanese instruments and inspired by distant folklore, the score moves between peacefulness and danger, colour and darkness, echoing the dualities of the natural world and transporting the listener to an ancient Nippon that never existed, yet feels like a half-remembered dream. Originally released on the Mega Drive in 1992 and featuring some of the most ingeniously complex and heaviest compositions to ever be squeezed through an FM sound chip, the music of THUNDER FORCE IV is relentlessly creative and uncompromising throughout; a real technological marvel and a triumph of metal against the odds. It thoroughly deserves the cult status it now holds and we are thrilled to be releasing it.

THUNDER FORCE IV is presented as a triple 180g LP, featuring 38 in-game tracks and 10 unused bonus tracks, all of which were sourced from the original console. The original Japanese score from the classic Sonic the Hedgehog game, newly remastered and pressed on vinyl for the first time!

SONIC CD (also known as Sonic the Hedgehog CD) was originally released in 1993 for SEGA’s Mega-CD system. Based around a unique time travel concept, SONIC CD is the most non-linear of the classic Sonic games and the music, composed by Naofumi Hataya and Masfumi Ogata, brilliantly reflects the shifting tones and alternate paths of the game. The score accompanied both the Japanese and European versions of the game, but was subsequently re-written (by different composers) for the US release.

This remastered edition of the original Japanese score is presented as a triple 180g vinyl LP in a heavyweight single pocket sleeve, with a newly arranged track list based around the game’s various “Time Zones,” to provide a different listening experience from previous versions. It is accompanied by three double-sided art prints, featuring original artwork from the SEGA archives, exclusive liner notes by composer Naofumi Hataya, a bespoke etching design on Side F and a download code for the album in both lossy and lossless formats. Continuing our partnership with Treasure, we are honoured to release the score from their legendary shooter, IKARUGA, for the first time on any format. 

Unlike its spiritual predecessor, RADIANT SILVERGUN, the music of IKARUGA is intense, compact and relentless in its focused energy. Steeped in dramatic tension and propelled by frenetic synths, this sublime score, composed by Hiroshi Iuchi (who also directed the game) perfectly encapsulates the meticulous design and demanding nature of this most revered of shooters.
