In Greek mythology, the Moirae are a group of three sisters who are often referred to as the Fates. They are considered to be the personifications of destiny, fate, and the inevitability of life's course. The Moirae are typically depicted as three elderly women who control the threads of human lives, symbolizing the idea that all life is bound by the threads of fate. Clotho, the youngest, spins the thread of life, determining its beginning; Lachesis, the middle sister, measures its length and decides life's events; and Atropos, the eldest, with her shears, cuts the thread, signifying the inevitability of death. Together, the Moirae represent the idea that fate is predetermined and inescapable. They are often invoked in Greek mythology and literature to emphasize the idea that no one can escape their fate or alter the course of destiny. Even the gods themselves are subject to the will of the Moirae, emphasizing the concept of preordained fate in Greek mythology. In this work, each string instrument represents a sister with specific musical textures and colours. At some point all the roles are alternating through the instruments, representing the complexity of life by resulting to a poetic end which is unavoidable for everything, as fate is constantly present from the beginning to the end. ‘Moirae’ is a lament dedicated to my uncle.
