Lunch Break Episode 1

Welcome, Midnighters, to another immersive journey with The Midnight Project. It's the last day of January 2024, and we're closing the month with episode #087, a thrilling blend of fresh and unreleased techno tracks.

DJ Panda and Roy Navas started the show with "Wake Me Up." This track epitomizes the pulsating energy of modern techno, with DJ Panda's signature dynamic beats and Roy Navas's innovative sound design. It's a collaboration that showcases the evolving landscape of techno, where established and emerging talents converge.

In the heart of the set is my upcoming track, "Vault." Crafting this piece was a journey through my personal reflections and musical experiences. "Vault" represents a storage of memories and the unlocking of new sonic possibilities. It's a blend of my signature style with a hint of experimentation, aiming to push the boundaries of what we know as techno.

Lastly, Rory Marshall brings us "Stop Talking." Rory's ascent in the techno scene has been nothing short of meteoric. This track shows his ability to intertwine classic techno rhythms with a modern twist. His production's precision and fearless approach to sound design make "Stop Talking" a standout piece in this episode.

Narrator: "Vértigo," realizada en 2021 por Lorna Simpson, es una serigrafía panorámica de 12 pies de ancho (365,8 cm), aumentada con tintas aplicadas con pincel y otros medios después de la impresión. Un área contigua de azul intenso abarca y domina tres cuartas partes de la obra. Rectangular e impresa sobre fibra de vidrio rígida, se asemeja a una pintura gigantesca, 8 ½ pies de alto (259,1 cm).

Parece representar un acantilado o una pendiente vertical junto al mar. La cima del acantilado solo aparece como una línea que atraviesa el panorama bajo el cielo. De él descienden vetas untuosas, como estrías en la roca. Estas se superponen y difuminan entre sí: algunas son finas como un cabello, otras son tan anchas como una moneda de 25 centavos, algunas parecen nítidas, otras parecen simplemente proyectar un lavado sobre las demás. Destellos de verde azulado y tonos de negro le aportan dinamismo a la obra.

A lo largo de la parte inferior de la pintura, el acantilado se cruza con un margen pálido de bordes irregulares con un tinte azul desteñido. Tiene varias manchas y borrones, y parece un trozo de papel artístico de desecho que fue pegado allí. Si se lo observa de cerca, se parece más a una foto de ese tipo de papel. 

Al parecer, la tinta de algunas de las vetas se ha corrido desde la pared del acantilado hasta el "papel" de abajo. Dos vetas que se cruzan por completo parecen haber sido aplicadas con pincel y deliberadamente para crear esa ilusión. El resto, que son huellas de goteo secas, se puede ver que proceden de pequeños charcos de tinta en el propio papel, cerca pero no del todo del borde con el azul. 

Paralela a las vetas y hacia la izquierda desde el centro, hay una franja vertical de cuatro fotos con rostros de mujeres que llevan peinados de los años sesenta. La franja está parcialmente oscurecida por un lavado azul. Y parece haber sido recortada de un folleto. El rostro menos rayado y que se ve con mayor claridad es el que está más abajo de todos, el de la mujer con peinado afro. Es posible que las tres mujeres de arriba también sean negras, aunque tengan el pelo liso o alisado. Cuanto más arriba en el acantilado aparecen sus rostros y cabezas, más degrafilado en capas y más de raza blanca aparece su cabello. Podría decirse que es una especie de vértigo: la preocupación de no sobresalir como mujer de color a medida que se asciende en un mundo de los blancos. 

En otras partes de la pared del acantilado y paralelas a las vetas, hay unas pocas franjas de textos de revista más estrechas. Distintas franjas de texto, aparentemente iguales en longitud, que salen desde la parte inferior, emprenden el ascenso y se unen al mundo en la parte superior. Las que flanquean las fotos de los rostros sobresalen parcialmente por el borde superior hacia el cielo. Arriba, sus textos han sido entintados para que parezcan chimeneas sin rasgos distintivos o, tal vez, mecanismos para elevar cosas por el acantilado.

Ashley James: Les damos la bienvenida a la primera muestra de "Hacia la oscuridad: la figura contemporánea en el límite de la visibilidad." Me llamo Ashley James y soy curadora asociada de arte contemporáneo del Museo Guggenheim y curadora de Hacia la oscuridad.

Antes de que se inaugurara la exposición, hablé acerca de la muestra ante un público en vivo junto con Amitha Raman, copresentadora del podcast "Art from the Outside" (El arte desde afuera), un proyecto que trata de hacer accesibles al gran público conversaciones sofisticadas sobre el mundo del arte. Juntas dilucidamos algunos de los hilos conductores de la exposición. 

Amitha Raman: Quiero hablar sobre la exposición "Hacia la oscuridad." Ashley, esta es en realidad tu tercera exposición en el Guggenheim, pero es tu primera gran muestra en la rotonda. ¿Puedes decirnos de dónde surgió el concepto de la exposición? 

James: "Hacia la oscuridad"qe, básicamente reúne a un grupo de 28 artistas, quienes de una u otra forma ocultan la figura humana. Así pues, se trata de la visibilidad en dos sentidos: como concepto formal, pero también como concepto social. Entonces, ¿qué significa ser visibles en el espacio público? ¿Ser visibles en nuestras carreras? ¿Ser visibles en la historia del arte? Y así sucesivamente. Así que me interesaba mucho el grupo de artistas que, de muy diversas maneras, te ofrecen algo de la figura, pero luego te lo quitan, o bien nunca te lo dan del todo.

Es posible que la mayoría de ustedes hayan visto estas imágenes de daguerrotipos de personas esclavizadas hechas a mediados del siglo XIX; a veces de frente, a veces de perfil. Formaban parte de un proyecto que básicamente promovía ideas en torno al racismo científico, y, en esencia, presentaban este argumento de que hay un tipo específico, o de que hay muchos tipos de seres humanos, entre los cuales las personas negras están en el extremo inferior.

Así que la pregunta es, ¿qué significa que el sujeto negro encuentre, en cierta forma, su momento de origen en el espacio de la fotografía, o uno de los momentos de origen en el espacio de la fotografía, en este..., quiero decir, la cosificación es lo de menos, pero en esta especie de espacio violento de deshumanización? Y creo que hay un gran número de artistas que están pensando seriamente en lo que significa para la fotografía, básicamente, tener integrada esta tensión en su interior. 

Por un lado, ofrece muchísimo acceso y visibilidad, que como personas deseamos por muchos motivos. Al mismo tiempo lleva consigo, en su circulación, esta amenaza de sobreexposición y de aquello que puede ser usado en tu contra. Creo que el medio de la fotografía es el punto de partida de esa conversación sobre la tensión de la visibilidad —el deseo de ocultar, pero también el de estar presente y ser legible en varios espacios—. 

Raman: Ashley, ¿qué esperas que aprenda el público de esta exposición?  

James: Hay algo muy... creo que en esencia hay una experimentación formal realmente emocionante, ya que ocultar y revelar al mismo tiempo es todo un desafío. Y creo que es mucho lo que se puede lograr al interactuar en los límites de algo, porque es en ese límite donde se aprende sobre los parámetros de una cosa.
