We first met Joumana when we played alongside her at a gig in Edinburgh last year. Though Glasgow-based, she is in no way limited to a local scene. Her 2023 rap sheet includes playing at and curating amazing shows between Paris and Berlin, a residency on @subcityradio and not to forget her wicked set for @zagerlat on @myanaloguejournal. 

Joumana’s selections are influenced by her Egyptian heritage, spanning almost every genre but always holding Arabic and African sounds at their core. Her ability to discover tunes that pay homage to African artists and labels from across the continent makes her a true embodiment of global sound.

She is a fine example of the power that dance music has in providing us access to global rhythms, it reminds us that dance music is a global sub-culture, with global origins. Is that an oxymoron? We don’t think so. Because it has the power to unite people from across the world in celebration of cultures and sounds completely different to that which they’re familiar with. Joumana preserves that power and we respect that. 

So give this mix a whirl. It’s top notch. It’ll broaden your horizons. It’ll remind you of the power of dance music. But most of all, its full of selections that’ll make you want to move.
