We wrote Pidgin on stage at Brixton Jamm, and its ended our live sets ever since – a mashup of musical languages we speak, mixing junglist breaks with dense harmonies and fearless improv. Recorded partly at Giant Wafer studios and partly in isolation, we wanted to capture our longing for the stage and distil it into 2 minutes. Straight out the gates you know you’re in for a treat when the beat is immediately flipped and stacked with horns before tenor sinks its teeth into the beat.

Don Johnston & Joe Alias - Fields (ft. Dat Brass) [Swing & Bass]

Drawing parallels between Jason’s quest on the Argo and the struggles of young people in employment, dat Brass’ MC Looby rants against corporate loyalty atop bubbling brass in their single, ‘The Golden Fleece’. Echoing raucous live shows, ‘Fleece’ builds to a crescendo of distorted horns, driven drums and sub bass from MD Rudd, ending with a soaring, effects-driven alto solo from Jake Heath that demands a replay. Rudd and Looby expand upon the song’s themes in an animated music video rallying against greed and excess. The band relish in expanding what is expected of artists, creating in-house media and working closely with independent artists to reiterate messaging. Treading the line between epic dystopian philosophy and a floor-filling call to arms, ‘Fleece’ is the ideal introduction to upcoming album, ‘dB’ - a unique mix of new British jazz, old British punk, contemporary dance music and classic hip-hop.

dB’s latest cut Humble Pie fades into existence, as if slowly approaching a dub show, far behind warehouse walls. Rachel Kerry's effortless vocals perfectly match meandering horns and a swaggering beat, while Looby muses on the trappings of a tiny slice of fame in a stripped back verse. As the hook returns, the track’s hypnotic atmosphere is undeniable; brass and drums build for what feels an eternity before the track climaxes as a heavy DnB floor-filler produced by Bristol don, Dr. Meaker.
